This position will require flexible working hours. Woodpecker monitoring and fire management often require extended hours, including very early mornings.

 

JOB DUTIES:

 

This position reports directly to the Forestry Supervisor II in the Forest Ecology Unit of the Resources Section.  The incumbent performs entry-level forestry work.  The position works independently and with other forest staff to manage the forest's endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers (RCW’s), improve habitat for other listed species, protect soil and water quality, and control invasive species. 

 

The incumbent assists the Biological Scientist II with the monitoring and management of the RCW population on Blackwater River State Forest.  Duties include observing birds and identifying individual birds' colored leg bands through spotting scopes; inspecting tree cavities with pole-mounted cameras; climbing cavity trees, using ladders; leg-banding RCW’s; capturing and transporting adult birds; recording data on computers or other devices.

 

Maintains and manages RCW cavity trees.  Responsible for the annual survey of all RCW trees on Blackwater River State Forest.  Measures cavity trees and marks them with paint; records tree locations with GPS, paint-marks buffers around cavity trees.  Searches for new signs of RCW activity.  Builds artificial nest cavities, using power saws, drills, punches, and other tools.  Installs artificial cavities, using chainsaws and other tools atop a 20 foot ladder.  Removes squirrels and other cavity parasites. Uses farm tractor and power tools to cut brush and small trees around cavity trees. Applies herbicides to control hardwoods.  Surveys the forest for suitable sites for RCW cavities.  Documents work. 

 

Assists Forest Rangers and Resources staff with prescribed burning operations.  Clears fuels around cavity trees; ignites fires; Uses hand tools and operates small, portable pumps; monitors and records fire effects on vegetation and listed species.

 

Identifies and marks sensitive areas, such as wetlands and ponds, for protection from logging and other timber management operations.  Marks timber in critical habitat areas, following established silvicultural prescriptions and guidelines for managing endangered species, including RCW’s.   Uses paint marking guns, basal area prisms, and other forestry equipment. 

 

Maintains all assigned equipment, including vehicles, chainsaws, ladders, and other forestry equipment. 

 

Operates ATV’s, farm tractors, and other equipment on erosion-control projects.  Applies fertilizer, seed, and straw to stabilize and revegetate closed roads. 

 

Assists resources staff with identification and control of invasive plants.  Applies herbicides and uses hand tools and saws to remove plants.

 

Performs other related duties as assigned.
