Your Specific Responsibilities:
CLINICAL DUTIES:
- Skilled Nursing Care: Ensures provision of skilled nursing care to students including but not limited to triage of and first aid to ill/injured students; accurate administration/self-administration of medications to and by students; implementation of ordered care plans; and assessment and screening for student health risks and medical conditions. Ensures the safety of individuals attending school clinics. Identifies students at risk for pregnancy, STDs, substance abuse, and social and behavioral health issues. Refers those students in need of further care.
- Collaboration: Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with Jefferson County Schools (JCS) students, parents, and faculty; DOH Jefferson team members; and DOH School Health program personnel.
- Parent/Guardian Communication: Ensures communication with students’ parent/caregiver promptly and often, including but not limited to failed screenings; referrals and their processes; medical concerns, issues, or updates; medication re-supply request; and IMMEDIATE notification of injury or suspected injury.
- Care Plans: Provides individualized healthcare plans and emergency care plans for students with applicable health conditions according to established policy, guidelines, and protocols. Identifies and decreases barriers to compliance through parent/caregiver communication, education, and resource awareness.
- Documentation: Monitors all clinic records and documentation for accuracy. This includes but is not limited to clinic logs, medication logs, electronic records, and paper health records. Maintains proficiency in JCS and DOH software.
- Screenings: Plans, coordinates, and implements all mandated health screenings by assigned dates as set forth by the School Health Program. Screenings include but are not limited to vision, hearing, body mass index, and scoliosis. Identifies and completes re-screenings and medical evaluation referrals for students.
- Education: Coordinates and implements health education presentations to students. May also provide health education to JCS staff and community as requested or directed.
- Infection Control: Adheres to universal precautions. Triages all students for infection risk, and isolates those students identified as potentially infectious. Ensures school clinics remain clean and tidy. Ensures all clinic surfaces are sanitized at the end of each day.
ADMINISTRATIVE AND PROGRAMATIC DUTIES:
- Reporting Deliverables: Prepares, reviews with supervisor, and submits by assigned date: annual School Health Report, biannual School Health Services Plan, and Kindergarten and Seventh Grade Compulsory Immunizations Annual Report. Completes internal monthly Leadership Reports and quarterly Performance Management Worksheet. Completes additional reporting as specified by supervisor or senior leadership.
- Meetings: Attends and engages in all assigned meetings. These include but are not limited to: internal staff and leadership meetings, statewide programatic meetings, school meetings, and collaborative partner meetings.
- Data Compliance and Review: Ensures student records are reviewed, complete and include up to date immunization records and physicals by assigned dates set forth by the DOH School Health Program. Enters client service records (CSRs) in Employee Activity Records (EARs) into Health Managament System (HMS) within 7 days of the service date, or the date of receipt of service data, in accordance with the current School Health Coding Manual, DOH coding manual, and DOH-Jefferson performance requirements.
- Supply Management and Budget: This position is responsible for preparation and approval of purchasing, monitoring program spending, and budget adjustment. This position ensures appropriate utilization and storage of supplies, monitoring of inventory expiration dates, and ensures school health clinics are stocked with needed medical and office supplies. Participates in at minimum, quarterly school health budget meetings with Community Health Nursing Director and Business Manager. Communicates to supervisor and business manager school health needs impacting budget.
- Community Engagement and Education: Participates in student and community health data. Promotes the School Health Program throughout the community. Participates in faculty, parent/teacher organizations when needed. Serves as overall chairperson of the School Health Advisory Council ensuring at least bi-annual meetings.
- SnapCare(Snap) Program: If such staff are assigned to DOH Jefferson School Health program: Ensures Snap deliverables are met, including, but not limited to timely submission of mission requests; monthly submission of Activity Reports; oversight of SnapCare program staff; meeting with Snap program liaisons; and reporting any issues to supervisor and assigned School Health Program/Snap liaison.
OTHER:
- Availability: Maintains professional availability to clients, DOH staff, and JCS staff. Daily, for both the Florida Department of Health and Jefferson County Schools: read, respond and maintain work emails; maintain awareness of and adherence to work calendar and scheduled events.
- Quality Improvement: Identify, develop, and implement Quality Improvement (QI) and Quality Assurance (QA) standards and processes to enhance the overall quality of services provided by the School Health program. Identifies and collaborates with Jefferson School team members, DOH program managers, and community partners as appropriate for QI/QA. Assist Performance Management Council (PMC) and QI coordinator as requested. Compiles and reports program data for performance assessments.
- Training: Attends continuing education, especially as required for programatic compliance. Training will include statewide, programatic, and local assignments both in person and virtually. Some training will require travel.
- Team Support: Provides support as a staff nurse to DOH-Jefferson clinic as needed. Maintains a school clinic environment conducive to training nursing students. Supports DOH team camaraderie by attending employee engagement activities and team functions.
- Communication to Supervisor: Discloses all pertinent information related to school health, operational activities, and job function to supervisor in a timely manner. Communicates with supervisor weekly. Submits leave request in People First upon knowledge of need. Adds approved leave to Madison-Jefferson Staff Leave Calendar upon knowledge of approval.
- Assist supervisor as requested.

Public and personal speaking skills that effectively convey information. Ability to communicate effectively with others in writing as indicated by the needs of the audience. - Community Engagement and Education: Knowledge of population health issues to impactfully educate children, parents, and communities on healthy behaviors including nutrition, disease prevention, wellness promotion, dental care, social and emotional health, and social determinants of health.
- Record Keeping and Documentation: proficiency in maintaining accurate, organized medical records and adhering to privacy regulations.
- Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and operate a busy clinic environment independently and across multiple service areas.
Qualifications:
Minimum –
- Maintain active licensure in good standing as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464.
- Maintain a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- Maintain an active Driver’s License in accordance with the laws and regulations of the issuing state.
Working hours: (A) Daily from 7:15 am to 3:45 pm with a 30 min. lunch. (B) Total hours in workweek 40 (C) Explain any variation in work (split shift, rotation, etc.) May be required to adjust normal works hours to accommodate working clinic.
