Position Overview and Responsibilities:
This intermediate environmental position will perform:
Habitat restoration and species management activities (including prescribed fire, exotic vegetation removal, exotic animal removal, etc.). Maintain Burn boss active status and coordinate the Reserve's Fire Management Team according to the approved fire management plan (maintain fire-trainings as directed by RBNERR management Plan). Serve as ORCP’s statewide Division Fire management representative. (The time spent towards this, and all the following listed duties and the related time spent may vary and offset the time spent towards other duties depending on unforeseen demands. Examples may include extreme weather events (Hurricane, Flooding, oil/chemical spills, wildfire, etc.).
Conduct surveys for multiple species relative to habitat requirements; assist with the development of programs (management plans), as needed, to determine the effects of management activities on species within the Reserve; assist as directed with the coordination of staff
relative to these duties.
Assist with the process regarding the continued development of a multi-species habitat management plan; assist Stewardship Team with the coordination and transformation of protection efforts for multiple species to change from single-species focused goals into landscape level
habitat goals that will provide better direction for natural resource management and preservation efforts.
Assist the Facilities Team with the maintenance of all buildings, infrastructure and equipment including fire management related equipment (fire truck(s), chainsaws, pumps, etc.).
Serve as DEP Boating Safety training Coordinator (Including administrative and training duties). These responsibilities will depend on the
fluctuating training needs internally here at Rookery Bay, as well as from the regional Aquatic Preserves.
Serve as Stewardship team liaison to FWC Law Enforcement.
As needed and as directed: assist Stewardship Team with research-related activities & assist as needed with visiting investigator fieldwork.
Assist with the adaptation and implementation of the NERR Disaster Response Plan template specifically to serve the needs of the Rookery Bay Reserve. Also, assist as directed with the planning and conducting of any needed annual emergency plan training and exercises.
Perform other duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the terminology, principles and analytical techniques of ecology as related to natural resource land management. Skills in data collection and analysis principles and procedures; report writing, technical and general. Skills in operation of motor vehicles (tractor, heavy equipment & trucks), nautical vessels. Skills in the use of personal computers and word processing and spreadsheet software, and of a Geographic Information System. Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner. Work independently; plan, organize and coordinate work assignments; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; utilize problem-solving techniques; effectively coordinate the work activities of others: perform fieldwork in severe and/or adverse conditions; and swim. Skills interpreting maps (compass & GPS in difficult terrain and remote locations), skilled in use of a variety of power-tools.

Position of Special Trust Requirement:
This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.
Applicable Job-Specific License or Certifications:
Within the first year of employment must complete and receive Burn-Boss Certification and Herbicide Applicator's License
Preferred Qualifications:
Insert preferred experience, training, education, and licensure or certification.
- Current Burn Boss certification
- Experience in equipment repair and maintenance
- Experience in operating motorized vessels
Pay:
$48,000-$50,000 Annually
