Your Specific Responsibilities:
This position serves as one of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) local agency's designated breastfeeding experts, available to provide follow-up breastfeeding support to WIC participants; act on referrals from other WIC staff regarding complex breastfeeding situations beyond their scope of practice; and assess and counsel mothers and infants with complex breastfeeding situations. Contributes to the organization's culture of perfom1ance excellence by actively seeking to improve personal and organizational performance through measurement, analysis. knowledge management, and processes improvements and participation in performance management committees, councils, and/or workgroups. Continuously demonstrates the Department's ICARE values. This position reports to the Community Health Workers Supervisor Ill.
Provides breastfeeding assessment and counseling to WIC clients. Client needs are correctly assessed, and appropriate recommendations are given.
Works cooperatively with hospital lactation staff to expedite client service for those clients in need of a breast pump.
Provides breastfeeding classes following established lesson plan.
Provides follow up services in clinic and by telephone. Maintains accurate telephone log.
Assists with breastfeeding promotion and education activities. Prepares displays for community outreach activities.
Assists the Breastfeeding Coordinator with provision of breastfeeding educational updates and in-service training for WIC and other DOH-Collier employee. Assists in planning and provision of World Breastfeeding Week activities. Recommends references and resources for staff use.
Monitors breastfeeding support supplies and educational materials assuring smooth provision of services. Accurately reconciles site breast pump and breastfeeding supply inventory monthly.
Provides and documents appropriate referrals including but not limited to Healthy Start, childbirth classes, Immunizations Program, family planning, smoking cessation, community food and assistance agencies, and other sources of client support.
Accurately and promptly completes administrative forms as required (examples: Employee Action Reports (EARs) / Health Management System (HMS), timesheet, travel requesUreimbursement).
Attends staff meetings and completes required training.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Competent keyboard skills required.
- Ability to learn FL-WiSE data system, DOH software applications and use a calculator.
- Ability to provide breastfeeding education to groups as well as individuals.
Qualifications:
Required:
High School diploma or equivalent.
A minimum of 1-year experience in counseling breastfeeding women.
Valid driver's license and to provide own reliable transportation to assigned work sites.
Incumbent will have access to records containing social security numbers in the performance of job duties in accordance with Department of Health Policy 50-19-15.
Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
Preferred:
International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), or Certified Lactation Educator (CLE)
Multilingual – ability to speak English and Spanish and or English and Creole.
