Currently hold or obtain an Associates degree within one (1) year of employment is required.


A bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university is preferred.


Applicants are required to have the following: 

  • Florida Firefighter II Certificate of Compliance or Firefighter I as defined in 633.408., 412 FS must be obtained within 180 days of employment or obtain Firesafety Inspector I certification as defined in 633.216 FS within 12 months of employment.
  • Florida Fire Instructor I within 180 days of employment.
  • Florida Fire Instructor II certification (must be obtained within 1 year of employment).
  • Florida Fire Officer I Certification (must be obtained within I year of employment)
  • Minimum of six (6) years in the Fire Service
  • Six (6) years with a Fire Department (paid or volunteer)
  • Florida Fire Officer II certification must be obtained within 2 years of employment
  • Documentation of professional development by receiving college credits or program certificate of completion.


Additional preference will be given to applicants with: 

  • Two (2) years’ experience as Florida Fire Instructor
  • Experience as educational program manager
  • One (1) or more years’ experience in course design.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of instructor experience teaching in a classroom or using online course delivery.
  • Experience teaching classes in the Programs of Study contained in Chapter 69A-37.065 Florida Administrative Code, specifically in the program areas of Fire Officer, Inspector, Instructor, or Fire Investigator.
  • Experience developing lesson plans.


The work location for the positions is at the Florida State Fire College in Ocala, FL.


The starting annual salary is $45,848.04


Employees of the Department of Financial Services are paid on a monthly pay cycle. 


This position requires a security background check, including fingerprint as a condition of employment.

Minimum Qualifications for this position include the following REQUIRED ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the techniques for planning, implementing, or evaluating adult educational programs.
  • Knowledge and ability to schedule and facilitate virtual meetings.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to plan, develop, organize, and coordinate work assignments
  • Ability to develop and revise education program courses including curriculum with plan of delivery.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of customer/clientele.
  • Ability to understand and apply Florida Statute, Florida Administrative Code, policies and procedures relating to educational programs
  • Ability to instruct adult vocational courses in a classroom setting.



  • Consults with and advises supervisory, administrative, and instructional personnel in program development including curriculum content, study plans and instructional techniques.
  • Plans and coordinates statewide education conferences and workshops for educational and administrative personnel.
  • Review and revise training and certification education programs and services to ensure that activities conform with existing laws, regulations, and agency policies.
  • Consults on and coordinates statewide programs of educational surveys.
  • Recommends the approval of vocational instructional programs proposed by the training providers, colleges, and universities.
  • Identifies training needs of constituent groups and arranges for training to address the identified needs.
  • Provides leadership and coordination for the training directors of training providers, colleges, and universities.
  • Provides leadership and coordination for the chief academic officers and chief student personnel.
  • Reviews, recommends for approval, and monitors new course offerings relative to certification.
  • Reviews, and recommends for approval new courses relative to certification proposed by training providers, colleges, and universities.
  • Provides leadership and coordination for the continuing education and recertification of fire inspectors and instructors.
  • Provides classroom instruction as needed
  • Performs related work as required.
