Please Note: This is a School Health Nurse position working 10-months out of the year using leave without pay (LWOP) for the two-month school summer break and school closures during holiday breaks throughout the year.
Salary will be $2,032.00 biweekly, $52,832.00 pro-rated for 10 months (44,704.00), 22 bi-weekly pay periods at $2,032.00 per pay period.
Your Specific Responsibilities:
The Registered Nurse is a public health nursing position in the School Health Program with the Florida Department of Health in Okeechobee County. This 10-month position provides health education services and nursing care at assigned schools and requires independent problem-solving using nursing judgement and skills within parameters established by law and policy. The Registered Nurse will work directly under the supervision of the School Health Nursing Supervisor. The incumbent is expected to provide high quality customer service and clinical excellence and be able to independently perform assigned duties.
Duties and Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Provides nursing care to students and staff, to include interviewing, counseling, health education and initial health assessment according to approved protocols and policies in the school setting.
- Develops and implements nursing care plans with on-going evaluation and makes revisions as necessary.
- Works with families and school personnel, evaluating needs and possible resources to help meet the health needs of students.
- Provides case management services when appropriate.
- Plans and implements health screening programs. Makes referrals as needed and tracks to completion.
- Reviews and updates students' health records.
- Documents appropriately and accurately.
- Assists in the achievement of the School Health Services program goals and objectives.
- Provides training and monitors performance of non-licensed personnel in the schools, designated to perform specific health related duties. Assists with planning and utilization of school health staff.
- Monitors daily school health clinic operations and initiates actions to improve services.
- Assigns tasks to and monitors performance of school health aides.
- Plans and conducts health education classes when needed.
- Providing support to schools during summer school sessions as needed.
- Prepares, submits required reports.
- Functions as a health resource person in the schools and community.
- Participates as an active member of the School Health Advisory Committee.
- Participates in staff meetings, in-service training and educational workshops and conferences.
- Attends community meetings, educational workshops, and/or conferences as funding allows.
- Keeps School Health Nursing Supervisor notified of issues or anything that may become a potential problem and recommends changes.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to work independently, with guidance and support from off-site supervisor.
- Knowledge of nursing principles and techniques
- Knowledge of and ability to use the nursing process to assess client health needs.
- Knowledge of recommended immunization schedules and school entry health requirements.
- Ability to teach appropriate tasks to non-licensed staff and to monitor their performance.
- Outstanding internal and external customer service skills.
- Ability to interpret and follow nursing instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously, in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to solve problems creatively,
- Ability to prioritize and organize tasks for maximum efficiency.
- Must possess basic computer skills.
Qualifications Required:
Valid Florida Driver’s License required. Current Certification in CPR & First Aid; Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.27 and one year of nursing experience. Must be able to lift 25+ pounds.
Emergency duty: Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency or as needed. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural. Employees may be expected to report to a Special Needs Shelter located outside of the county if Okeechobee County moves their Special Needs Shelter to a regional shelter.
