Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position is a Senior Community Health Nurse with the Department of Health in Okeechobee County.  The position is responsible for the provision of nursing support services in the clinic area by   assisting providers with exams, treatments, and procedures. Performs and oversees nursing assessments, interviews, counseling and education, documenting all client interactions accurately. Performs and oversees general clinic duties under RN protocol, limited exams, resupply visits, pregnancy testing, immunizations, and labs. Is responsible for pharmacy inventory, maintains 100% accountability of all medication in med room, receives and confirms orders are correct and all meds are stored and handles appropriately.

Acts as back up for Family Planning Program coordinator. Ensures all FP reports are completed timely, ensures POs are updated annually for sterilization providers, conducts reviews of family planning educational materials, ensures that all appropriate staff complete annual FP trainings. Acts as lead for FP site visits.

Assists provider with exams and sets up room as appropriate for visit. Handles specimens and processes for testing. Restocks exam rooms as needed, maintaining adequate operating levels. Sterilization of procedure equipment and maintenance of autoclave as needed. Collects specimens and veni-punctures for provider and outreach events. Completes laboratory requisitions, assures specimens are entered correctly into Change HealthCare electronic lab system, labeling, and handling correctly. Packages lab specimens for shipment to appropriate labs and orders lab supplies needed through State and Quest Laboratories. Reports positive STD/HIV cases to STD program manager in St Lucie County. Is responsible for following up and assessing clients that are part of the TB program, this includes drawing blood, scheduling chest x-rays, coordinating with the state TB office, issuing medications, providing directly observed therapy at various locations in the county. Assists with assigned Epidemiology and other reportable diseases, collecting and entering data into Merlin and other electronic health systems, locates lost to follow up cases and clients.

Coordinates bimonthly Hepatitis/Perinatal program outreach in the community of Okeechobee County as well as STD and HIV testing outreach, focusing on indigent/homeless, drug rehabilitation centers and county jail. Documents all outreaches in CHD outreach calendar. Provides follow-up 09 Hepatitis A and B vaccine and education to clients who were previously tested and require vaccine.  Travels to county jail, for all court ordered HIV testing, and completes paperwork, and notifies designated officials that results are available for victim. Participates in all the Hepatitis Prevention calls, meetings, and completes Hepatitis Quarterly Report to Hepatitis Program in Tallahassee. Travels/ attends meetings, trainings, and educational programs, and participates in Quality Improvement Activities as related to the HIV/STD/Hepatitis program. Responsible for completing and submitting monthly Narcan report to the state, making sure all front desk and nursing staff are versed in the distribution and use of Narcan.

Responsible for the employee immunization program to include providing vaccine, tracking vaccines and notifying staff of due dates. Provides client vaccines for VFC, Program 17, and adult vaccines, documents into Florida Shots system. Checks vaccine dates and informs Primary VFC Coordinator 90 days prior to expiration date for timely transfer to other facilities and maintains 100% accountability of all vaccines in all programs. Checks and documents temperature on immunization refrigerator and freezer in am and pm each day.

Enters EARs and timesheet accurately and on time without supervision. Keeps Clinic Nursing Supervisor notified of issues or potential problems and recommends changes. Attends and participates in departmental professional meetings, training sessions and conferences to ensure accuracy and maintain current knowledge of policies and procedures as they relate to all assigned duties and responsibilities. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge: Ability to operate a computer; perform health screenings with appropriate testing equipment; Skill in interpersonal relationships. Adheres to state statutes, rules and regulations, practices, and procedures as they pertain to each of the program's functional areas.

Ability: Ability to independently manage multiple work assignments according to applicable State of Florida and DOH rules, regulations, and procedures under the direction of clinic supervisor. Takes direction; accepts constructive criticism and responds and implements suggestions for improvement. Ability to drive to various locations within the county, ability to move equipment including vaccine coolers, tents, chairs, and testing materials in and out of vehicles. Ability to be outside for up to four hours at one time.

Skills: Navigates the internet, uses office and necessary systems/software and standard office equipment, and supplies related to position.

Communicate Effectively: Takes initiative to communicate accurate, up to date plans and information to peers and management. Expresses thoughts clearly, both verbally and in writing. Listens and understands the views of others.

Customer Service/ Human Relations:  customer and personal services including needs assessment techniques, quality service standards, customer satisfaction evaluation techniques. Ability to communicate effectively with others in writing as indicated by the needs of the client. Ability to find information and identify essential information.

Time Management: Manages a variety of responsibilities in a timely, efficient manner and is able to prioritize tasks, plan organize and coordinate work assignments.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum –

  • Current RN license in FL
  • Willing to work emergency duty.
  • Valid FL driver’s license and ability to drive.
  • Current phlebotomy certification or willingness to become certified in phlebotomy within 6 months of start date.
  • Current certified in CPR/First Aid or willing to be certified within first 6 months of start date.
