An opportunity is available for a self-motivated, hardworking individual to replace a Park Services Specialist at Blue Spring State Park located in Orange City, Florida. This Park Services Specialist is involved with all delegated aspects of park operations and is part of the management team at Blue Spring State Park. 

 

This role encompasses, administration, maintenance, resource management, visitor services and protection. Assists in the planning, coordination, and implementation of both natural and culture resource management and restoration projects. Participates in the control of exotic animal and plant species. This position is also the park’s team leader/shift supervisor, responsible in resource management and park’s equipment and facility maintenance programs. This specialist is critical in maintaining good public relations and service for park visitors.

Pay:

Base salary $3,093.09 monthly/$37,117.08 annually

 

Your Specific Responsibilities:

 

VISITOR SERVICES - Explains facilities and services provided for public use, enjoyment and education; meets visitors, answers questions, provides information and directions.  Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations.  Provides natural and cultural history interpretive programs and services via tours, walks, and programs.

 

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - Implements ecological burning plan for fire type plant communities; recognizes fire type communities, control burning techniques and maintain fire lanes. Implements vegetation and wildfire management plans; recognizes communities and maintains optimum species control via natural and chemical means.  Implements site restoration projects such as reforestation and erosion control.  Implements water resource management plans.  Assists with all areas of resource management including equipment operations and prescribed and wildfire activities. The position coordinates and oversees the park exotic plant and animal removal plan, mechanical treatment contractors and habitat restoration and other related subjects, collecting and recording data on parks imperil species like West Indian Manatees and Florida Scrub Jay as well as corresponding with management and outside stakeholders and other agencies about any park resource developments.

 

MAINTENANCE - Constructs, maintains, and repairs on buildings, fences, trails, service roads, fire lanes, boardwalks, campsites, picnic sites, boat ramp, docks, and small engines and tractor repairs and implements. Maintains cleanliness of grounds, facilities and park equipment.

 

ADMINISTRATION - Prepares forms and reports on a wide range of subjects including fees, receipts, visitor use, visitor contacts, patrols, wildlife sighting and population counts, accidents, crisis and miscellaneous incidents, vehicle, boat, and equipment operations, property records, p-cards, purchase orders and requisitions, etc.  Answers telephone, operate radio equipment, personal computer and maintain logs.  Answers correspondence and maintains park files.

 

PROTECTION - Ensures Park rules are enforced pertaining to all natural, historical and archaeological facilities and resources and use thereof for enjoyment of the visitor.  Ensures visitor, facility and park grounds safety.

 

Performs related work as required.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge ofFlorida’s natural and cultural resources; basic prescribed/wildfire concepts required to manage/restore natural communities; cultural resource preservation and techniques; basic arithmetic; computers and related software.

Skill in: Producing photographs, power point presentations, operation of video projection equipment and computers; public speaking, writing, and program presentation, all aspects of a volunteer program including record-keeping, recruiting, orienting, training, planning and implementing work assignments; maintaining good public relations through effectively communicating in a professional, tactful and courteous manner both verbally and written; following verbal and written instructions/directions; operating a point of sale system, handling cash, and reconciling receipts; accurately preparing reports; operating a variety of motorized equipment; operation of computers and various software programs; compiling and managing data; public speaking; researching, planning and preparing educational programs and events; identifying potential community related partnerships, network with existing community partnerships, and grow beneficial relationships.

Ability to: Operate a two-way radio; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; perform physical labor and lift 40 pounds; participate in resource management practices, which include but not limited to prescribed fire, non-native plant removal, application of herbicide; clean park facilities, including but not limited to, cleaning restrooms, picking up trash, facility repairs and groundskeeping; work outdoors with possible insects and other wildlife in inclement weather; provide good public relation techniques with internal and external customers; understand and apply rules, directives, policies, laws and regulations; work independently with minimum supervision; travel occasionally, successfully meet DRP standards for uniform and appearance.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of background/fingerprint check

 

Passing of moderate pack test must be completed prior to employment, and annually thereafter.  Prior to being hired, applicants will be given a single opportunity to take and successfully complete a supervised moderate pack test at a date and location to be announced.  The pack test requires applicant to complete a two mile walk while carrying 25 pounds in under 30 minutes.
