POSITION DESCRIPTION: A challenging opportunity is available for a self-motivated, hard working team player to fill an OPS Park Ranger position at Oscar Scherer State Park. This park covers approximately 1,400 acres and consists of 104 campsites, youth area camping, 15 miles of trails, a tidal estuary, creek and a swimming lake. Scherer Park, Inc.  The park contains one of the last strongholds of scrub habitat within Sarasota County with many endemic species such as the Florida Scrub Jay, Gopher Frog and Indigo Snake.  The candidate will be required to work independently with minimal supervision providing visitor services, resource management, administration, maintenance and protection of park facilities and guests. 


Knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position:  Skill and ability to use assorted power tools, equipment and motor vehicles.  Ability to:  follow written and verbal instructions; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; prepare reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; deal with visitor inquiries in a tactful, efficient and courteous manner; understand and apply rules, directives and policies, laws and regulations; conduct routine inspections and identify and investigate problems; assist in pre and post prescribed burn preparation and clean up, physical and chemical exotic plant removal; work rotating shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays; perform grounds and building cleaning and maintenance; work out of doors and in; lift 40 pounds and assist in transporting lumber and other supplies weighing 100 pounds or more; operate radio equipment; maintain a valid driver’ license.  Successfully meet position-specific DRP Burn Standards for Prescribed Fire


Licensure/registration/certification requirements (If applicable, list the appropriate Florida Statute or federal regulation cite):  Florida Class E driver’s license or an out-of-state class equivalent driver’s license.



Successful completion of annual moderate pack test.  Prior to being hired, applicant will be given a single opportunity to take and successfully complete a supervised moderate pack test at a date and location to be announced.  Pack test requires applicant to complete a two-mile walk while carrying 25 lbs. in less than 30 minutes
