POSITION DESCRIPTIONOscar Scherer State Park is looking for a self-motivated Park Service Specialist to provide park, vehicle, vessel and equipment maintenance; resource management via exotic plant control and participation in all facets of prescribed burning. The applicant must possess good communication skills (verbal and computer,) and be able to work independently. Maintenance duties will include, but are not limited to, using power tools and welding torches to perform work such as carpentry, cement work, plumbing and electrical. The applicant must be able to work rotating shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays. 

 

MAINTENANCE:  Plans, develops, manages and conducts projects related to park maintenance and safety.  Works alone, and with others, to insure park equipment is in working order.  Constructs and repairs roads, signs, foot bridges and nature trails within the park.  Responsible for the upkeep of the park grounds. Provides input, training and guidance to volunteers working in Oscar Scherer State Park.

 

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT:  Provides assistance in prescribed burning, exotic plant and animal removal and other natural and cultural resource management techniques.  Performs and assists in the construction and maintenance of fire lines and fence lines. Participates in the exotic plant control program for Oscar Scherer State Park; monitors the progress of park projects, reports results as required.

 

ADMINISTRATION:  Submits monthly vehicle and vessel use and repair logs to park manager in a timely manner.  Maintains records of repairs and use for all preserve vehicles and vessels. 

 

VISITOR SERVICES: Explains facilities and services provided for public use and enjoyment and education; meets visitors, answers questions, provides information and directions.  Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations.

 

PROTECTION: Ensures park rules are enforced pertaining to all natural and cultural facilities and resources, and use thereof, for the enjoyment of the visitor.

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position

 

Knowledge of: the principles and techniques of the skilled building trade or mechanical repair work; safety procedures required in maintenance and repair work.  Skill in: using tools and equipment in maintenance and repair work.  Ability to: perform a variety of skilled trades functions; read blueprints; install, maintain and repair electric motors, generators, and other mechanical equipment; take accurate measurements; follow written and verbal instructions; operate a motor vehicle; operate watercraft; lift heavy objects; maintain a valid drivers’ license. Maintain DRP Burn Standards for Prescribed Fire;  identify and treat invasive plant and animal species; prepare reports and records  Successfully complete background and fingerprint check.   Successfully complete Ranger Academy.

Licensure/registration/certification requirements (If applicable, list the appropriate Florida Statute or federal regulation cite):  Florida Class E driver’s license or an out-of-state class equivalent driver’s license;
