Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a professional nursing position providing public health nursing services to individuals, families, groups, and the community. The incumbent in this position is responsible for the integrity and confidentiality of data sets under their control and may use the Florida Department of Health (DOH) IT resources to visit internet sites as needed to perform the duties of this position. The incumbent will come to work and exhibit an attitude of friendliness and eager customer service towards all clients and act respectfully and courteously to fellow employees and clients.
Direct Nursing Care: Provides nursing interventions based on the nursing assessment consistent with quality of standards as defined by the public health nursing practice based on theory and research. Provides interventions such as teaching and counseling, and the administration or treatments and therapies prescribed by the clinicians. Conducts communicable disease interventions in accordance with the principles and standards of nursing practice to ensure safe and competent service. Acts as an advocate for the patient and family. Coordinates care plans and interventions with agency staff and support services within the Florida Department of Health in Bay County (DOH Bay) and community agencies to ensure continuity of care and expected outcomes using principles of case management. Evaluates care plans and effectiveness of interventions and adjusts each accordingly. Provides timely follow-up of critical laboratory finding. Documents assessments and interventions. Assess the workload, establishes priorities, adjusts work assignments, and directs others to ensure the timely provisions of services.
Teaches newly employed nurses advanced nursing arts and methods, evaluates and reviews newly hired nurses’ development by observing their work in the clinic. Orients new hires in order to give them guidance and counseling; instructs in the specialized fields of family planning, sexually transmitted diseases, and women’s health services. Instructs non-professional employees in a variety of professional nurse subjects. Participates in observing patients’ physical and behavioral reactions to medications. Participates as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning and implementation of treatment of individual patients. Works in conjunction with specialist physicians to ensure compliance with the patient’s medical treatment plan. Communicates with attending physicians, other healthcare professionals and agencies to ensure individuals receive coordinated approaches to care. Identifies community resources, arranges, and coordinates health, educational, social, rehabilitative, and economic services for the patient and family.
Continuous Quality Improvement: Participates in program evaluation through activities such as review of patients’ records, identifying system problems and making recommendations that can improve patient and family services. Responsible for providing and presenting finding to staff and for the maintenance and updating of local program manuals. Identifies recurrent health programs among clinic population and provides interventions based on findings.
Skill Maintenance: Maintains skills in public health nursing with special emphasis on administration of immunizations, home visiting, disaster nursing, program follow-up, and Basic Life Support (CPR).
Community Activity: Participates in community-based health screenings and health fairs, occupational/school health activities, and community immunization initiatives. Provides community-based group education. Represents DOH Bay on community teams and services on inter-agency committees.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills; moderate computer skills.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time, bend, climb one flight of stairs, and lift 25 pounds.
- Must be willing to learn Florida SHOTS, immunization, family planning, and sexually transmitted disease clinics.
- Must be willing to provide services without regards to race, economic status, sex, religious preferences, or handicap conditions.
Qualifications:
- Must have a current and valid Florida driver’s license
- Must hold a current and active Florida Registered Nursing license or a multi-state licensing from another Compact state.
- Must have a current CPR certification.
