Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is highly responsible work with the Escambia County Health Department (Escambia CHD) Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program requiring independent decision-making regarding nutrition clients. All work is performed under the supervision of a Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor. Adheres to all policies and procedures as set forth in the WIC Department of Health (DOH) 150-24 Manual, Florida’s WIC Information System and EBT (FL WiSE) manual and other written information or protocols.
Provides individual nutrition counseling for both high and low risk WIC clients. Utilizes diet histories, medical history, anthropometric and laboratory data to develop appropriate care plans for high-risk participants. Establishes appropriate goals and follow-up plans for clients. Identifies and refers medically high-risk clients to the licensed nutritionist. Verifies special formula prescription, amount, and type prior to taking to issuance staff.
Provides accurate information on breastfeeding to increase the rate of initiation and duration. Refers new prenatal clients to the Breastfeeding Peer Counselors. Instructs all new participants in the use of WIC Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards. Refers clients to other health and social services as appropriate.
Obtains heights and weights on WIC participants or applicants for the program using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approved techniques. Documents in FL WiSE following agency protocols.
Prepares handouts, brochures, and bulletin boards on quarterly education topics as assigned. Travels to satellite service sites as assigned to provide WIC nutrition education services. Assists in program audits, outreach, evaluation, and reports related to assigned areas of responsibility. Serves on community and health department committees as a nutrition expert and representative of the WIC Program. Provides information to the public as assigned. Audits charts as assigned for compliance with Federal, State, and local agency policy.
Reviews literature and attends meetings to keep abreast of the rapidly changing field of nutrition. Participation in professional organizations is encouraged. Represents WIC in community organizations and activities. Coordinates outreach activities for WIC. Other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of basic and therapeutic nutrition principles throughout the life cycle. Basic computer skills: Excel and Word.
Qualifications:
Minimum - Possession of at least a bachelor’s degree with a major course of study in human nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics, or food management. Registered Dietitian. Valid Driver’s License.
Other job-related requirements for this position: This position may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of this position includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural. T May be required to drive personal vehicle to various clinic sites.
