This is a highly responsible, independent position within the Florida Department of Health in Escambia County’s Communications, Health Education, Nutrition and Public Health Preparedness Programs performing a wide range of duties under the limited supervision of the Health Education Program Manager - SES. This position will be responsible for developing, implementing, and promoting health education programs and initiatives aimed at improving the health and wellness of employees internally to FDOH-Escambia. This position involves creating educational materials, conducting workshops, providing resources, and offering support to help people make informed health choices. The Health Educator will focus on areas such as disease prevention, nutrition, physical activity, mental health, and substance use prevention.  This position requires the ability to work independently and to work with both employees within and outside of FDOH-Escambia.  Public speaking, public relations, and computer skills are required. This position requires travel and some weekend and evening hours.  This is a Tobacco-Free position, and a background check will be required.

 

 Program Development & Delivery:

  • Design, implement, and evaluate health education programs that meet the specific needs of the target population.
  • Provide information on various health topics including nutrition, fitness, mental health, stress management, and chronic disease prevention through efforts such as bulletin boards and signage throughout FDOH-Escambia locations.
  • Organize and facilitate workshops, seminars, and wellness events to encourage healthy lifestyles.

Health Education & Counseling:

  • Provide resources for lifestyle improvement.
  • Use evidence-based strategies to address health behavior changes and increase awareness of available health resources.
  • Educate individuals on disease prevention and management, focusing on areas such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

Community Outreach & Advocacy:

  • Build relationships with community members, local organizations, and healthcare providers to promote wellness initiatives.
  • Advocate for policies and programs that promote public health and well-being.
  • Provide educational materials (e.g., brochures, pamphlets, social media posts) to inform the community about health topics.

Data Collection & Analysis:

  • Gather and analyze data on health trends and program effectiveness to improve future programming.
  • Monitor and evaluate the progress of wellness programs, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Maintain accurate records of services provided, participant feedback, and program outcomes.

Health Promotion:

  • Encourage physical activity, healthy eating, mental well-being, and regular health screenings through FDOH-Escambia wellness challenges.
  • Stay up to date with current public health trends and incorporate them into program offerings.
  • Collaborate with other health professionals, such as dietitians, fitness trainers, and mental health experts, to provide holistic care and services.

 

Continuous Learning and Professional Development

 

Participates in assigned and elective training functions that are designed to maintain and improve professional knowledge and skill including meetings, conferences and independent research. 

 

In-service/Staff Development: Participate in in-service and staff development programs related to job performance.

 

Other related duties: Provides additional assistance to the wellness program and all policy areas when assigned.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of health education, wellness strategies, and preventative healthcare practices.

Ability to develop, plan, implement programs.

Ability to work with employees and community partners.

Knowledge of coalition development. 

Ability to work independently, with minimal supervisor, prioritize and organization work assignments. 

Skilled in written and oral communications.

Ability to build and maintain partnerships.

Ability to load and transport equipment that weighs up to 25 pounds to satellite work sites or health fairs.

 

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in health education, health promotion, or public health.

Implementing health education interventions.

Public speaking in diverse audiences.

Experience creating health education materials for a variety of audiences.

 

At least one-year experience in health education and planning, implementing and evaluating health education programming.

 

Required to work outside of normal business hours to include nights and weekends as needed and may include some travel.
