Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • The incumbent in this position is a Registered Nurse (RN) working in a school health room setting under limited direction of the School Health Coordinator. The incumbent works a 10 month schedule during the academic school year to assist with the delivery of health services to public school students for the improvement of their health status with the goal of optimal health so health issues will not interfere with their education. School Health employees shall follow the guidelines set forth in the Emergency Guidelines for Schools adopted by the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) School Health Program. Responsibilities and duties include maintaining a cooperative, caring relationship with students and their parent’s/guardians, school staff and the Taylor County Health Department (CHD) staff.
  • The individual performs as a Registered Nurse. Cares for and triages ill or injured students presenting to the school health room. Performs first aid treatment and evaluation as needed. Performs vital signs and health assessments as necessary. Communicates with parent/guardian regarding illness or injury as indicated. Keeps school administration updated on the health and well-being of students. Administers medication to students following school guidelines. Performs and documents routine health screenings for students, including vision, hearing, height, weight, and head lice.
  • Clerical duties such as record keeping, reporting, filing, and use of office equipment. Proficient use of computer skills and school health database for data collection and record keeping. Responsible for the collection and maintenance of statistical data appropriate to support the objectives set forth in the School Health Plan and the completion of the annual School Health Report. Maintains accurate and up-to-date medication records. Prepares and sends letters to parent’s/guardians for missing documents and completion of consent forms. Completes health referral letters for glasses, dental work, and medical check-ups requiring follow-up care. Ensures student records are complete with follow-up as needed. Reviews all student health/emergency cards and refers any health concerns to the School Health Coordinator. Will require periodic visits to CHD for all mandatory staff meetings and trainings.
  • Serves as a team lead to other school health staff as needed. Assists School Health Coordinator with training school health staff on individual student’s care for needs such as diabetes, seizure precautions, allergic reactions, etc. Performs assessments and manages high-risk students for pregnancy, STD, drug/alcohol abuse, suicide, and chronic conditions. Refers students as necessary for counseling and medical care. Performs specialized medical procedures for students seen routinely in the school health clinic. Initiates, distributes, and follows care plans for students with chronic conditions. Performs group immunizations. Maintains student medications and records per policy and procedure.
  • Maintains supplies and order in the health room. Notifies supervisor of any supplies needed to ensure health room is adequately stocked. Maintains safe and sanitary conditions in the health room. Disinfects high traffic areas on a regular basis.
  • Performs other duties as required. Reports for duty as required in the event of a disaster.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology; nursing principles, practices, and techniques; First Aid guidelines as outlined by Taylor County School District
  • Skilled in using medical instruments; use of Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Word.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others in a courteous manner; actively listen and ask questions as appropriate; maintain accurate written and computerized records; communicate effectively; work under pressure; understand and follow written and verbal instructions; maintain client confidentiality; care for youth of all ages.
  • Ability and willingness to work with all students regardless of background medical need or handicap.

Qualifications:
Minimum - Clear and active licensure as a Registered Nurse, Valid Florida Driver's License. Must be willing to work a 10 month schedule during the school calendar year.
Preferred - Nursing experience with youth of various ages preferred.

This position is assigned to work at Taylor County High School (900 Nth Johnson Stripling Rd) and will float to other Taylor County Schools as needed.
