Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is specialized professional environmental work performing research on environmental radiation on lands to be mined and on lands that have been reclaimed after mining. The incumbent conducts environmental radiological surveillance to determine the environmental impact of phosphate mining. The employee must use discretion and independent judgment in performing these job duties in making determinations concerning Chapter 64E-5, Florida Administrative Code.  Duties:

Collects environmental samples and performs field evaluations on lands related to phosphate mining projects.  Distributes and collects area monitors to determine natural radiation enhancement in mined areas. Collects and prepares soil and water samples and performs soil characterizations. Performs gamma surveys. Prepares and maintains field monitoring equipment and devices.

Prepares reports on mining operations and on sampling and surveying activities.

Serves as a member of Florida's radiological emergency response team.

Other related duties.

Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.  Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

Available on a 24-hour-a-day basis for response to radiation emergencies. Perform duties as a member of the State Radiation Emergency Response Team. Employee is subject to emergency calls from his residence for the protection of life or property. 

This position is in compliance with and monitors compliance (when applicable) with the mandatory requirements in Sections 215.422 and 112.061, Florida Statutes, and Chapter 691-24.001, Florida Administrative Code. 

The incumbent is considered to have regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36.003, Florida Administrative Code.

Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License. The incumbent in this position may be required to use vehicles owned, leased, or operated by the state or county to conduct official state business. State or county vehicles shall be used only for officially authorized duties and not for personal use, unless a specific exception applies under Florida law (F.S. § 287.17).

Must be able to lift 60 pounds of equipment.  Pcard responsibilities.  Must receive a minimum score of 70% on each written exam of the required core training modules and must attend all required core training courses designated in the training and qualification procedures.

Federal certification in mammography inspections (MQSA - Mammography Quality Standards Act) will be required if deemed necessary by the Field Operations Environmental Administrator.

The incumbent in this position will be required to travel in-state away from their headquarters and out-of-state, to perform or support the performance of statutory functions. Travel purposes will include routine job activities, special assignments, meetings, conferences, and training.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of radiation.

This position requires daily in-office or field work. 

Preferred:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent 4 years of experience in the area of chemistry, physics, health physicist (radiation related) or nuclear medicine technology (or similar work experience).
