The Work You Will Do:

Equipment Operator - District Three / Ponce de Leon Maintenance

This position will perform minor maintenance and service work and repairs of equipment, operate a variety of small and medium equipment, perform maintenance on equipment, perform Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic), and perform manual labor.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. Operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to front end loader, skid steer load, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance; Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the chemical herbicide program.

 

Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.

 

Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.

 

Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.

 

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of:

  • Mathematical calculations
  • Standard safety rules and procedures. 

Skills in:

  • Operating a variety of hand and power tools
  • Operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles. 

Ability to:

  • Operate a variety of heavy equipment; read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms;
  • Maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures;
  • Communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions;
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds;
  • Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis;
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic;
  • Work independently; stand for an extended period of time. 

 

Licensure/Registration/Certification Requirements:

  • Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes is required at time of hire.
  • Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintains.
  • All herbicide applicators shall be licensed by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs in three areas: core curriculum, right-of-way, and aquatics.
  • The Department will allow an employee under the direct supervision of a licensed applicator to train and gain experience for a period not to exceed twelve months, after which they shall be licensed.

 

Other Job-Related Requirements:

  • Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies when necessary.
  • While on-duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires one year experience in the operation of small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes is required at the time of hire.

 

This position requires a valid Class B driver’s license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

  1. three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
  2. any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
  3. a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
  4. a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.

 

Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.

 

In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
