Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a mid-level epidemiologist position responsible for conducting surveillance, investigation, and analysis of diseases and other public health issues within the state of Florida. The incumbent works under the general direction of the Public Health Services Manager B-SES, applying the principles and methods of epidemiology to identify and characterize health problems, investigate outbreaks, and contribute to the development and evaluation of public health interventions. This role requires a strong foundation in epidemiological methods, data analysis, and technical communication.

Surveillance and Investigation:

  • Conduct routine surveillance activities for infectious diseases, communicable diseases, and other health conditions of public health importance.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and analysis of epidemiological investigations, including disease outbreaks and special studies.
  • Collect and manage data from a variety of sources, including laboratory reports, medical records, and interviews with patients and their contacts.
  • Utilize surveillance systems and databases to monitor disease trends and identify changes in health patterns.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Perform descriptive and basic analytical epidemiology, including the calculation of rates, ratios, and other statistical measures.
  • Use statistical software (e.g., R, SAS, Stata) to clean, manage, and analyze epidemiological data.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports, presentations, and scientific papers summarizing key findings and providing recommendations.
  • Create clear and concise data visualizations, such as graphs and maps, to communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.

 

Public Health Response:

  • Participate in the public health response to disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies.
  • Conduct interviews with cases and contacts to gather critical information for outbreak investigations.
  • Provide epidemiological support to local county health departments, healthcare providers, and other partners.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of public health education and outreach materials.

 

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with colleagues, supervisors, and other public health professionals on epidemiological projects and initiatives.
  • Communicate findings to internal and external partners in a professional and timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all epidemiological activities.

 

On call duties: Provide agency’s on-call services according to schedule.

 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles and methods of epidemiology, biostatistics, and disease control.
  • Proficiency in statistical software and data management platforms.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex findings clearly.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of public health policies and regulations.

 

Qualifications:

  • A valid Florida driver’s license is required.
  • Experience in epidemiology, biostatistical analysis, or disease prevention is preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher from a U.S. accredited college or university in public health or related field is preferred.
