Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a professional nursing position within the Clinical Department of the Department of Health in Charlotte County (DOH-Charlotte). The incumbent in this position is responsible for providing direct clinical services to clients accessing Immunizations, Family Planning, Sexually Transmitted Infections/Diseases (STI/STD)/HIV, Tuberculosis (TB) and Refugee Health Programs. These activities include provision of adult and childhood immunizations according to CDC/ACIP guidelines, provision of contraceptive methods, family planning counseling and referral services, STD/HIV testing and counseling, TB disease investigation and case management. This position requires knowledge of the public health system and the professional skills to interact with patients, health care providers and community partners along with the ability to interact with people with diverse social, economic, and cultural lifestyles and characteristics. This position also requires communication skills to interview, counsel, and provide client education. This position reports directly to the Public Health Services Manager B-SES.
Immunizations
- Administers child and adult immunizations according to ACIP and CDC guidelines
- Remains current with vaccine updates and ensures colleagues receive current information
- Ensures all vaccines are entered and tracked in Florida Shots
- Ensures safe handling and storage of vaccines according to VFC protocols
- Engages in child and adult vaccination promotion and advocacy in the community
- Provides outreach vaccination services for adults and children
Sexually Transmitted Infections
- Provides STI/HIV counseling and testing
- Administers STI treatments (oral, IM, SQ) per provider’s orders
- Provides Nurse Issuance medications according to protocol
- Documents health history, assessments, plan of care in the Health Management System
- Provides health education using evidence-based educational programs in a variety of community settings
Family Planning
- Educates and provides family planning services according to Family Planning Title X Administrative and Clinical Manuals and protocols
- Documents health history, assessments, plan of care in the Health Management System
- Documents and tracks information requested by the Healthy Start program
- Educates and refers for tubal ligations and vasectomies according to protocol
- Provides Nurse Issuance medications according to protocol
- Tracks and reconciles Nurse Issuance medications
- Consults with clinical providers as needed
Tuberculosis Control
- Provides backup TB case management services for TB and LTBI patients
- Implements and coordinates interventions identified in a case management plan
- Delivers continuous TB care by linking patients with appropriate service providers
- Ensures ongoing evaluation of the case management plan regarding patient treatment adherence and adjusts the plan accordingly
- Performs contact investigation around infectious TB cases
- Documents HIV results for TB cases in HMS and RVCT
- Provides targeted TB testing and complete treatment for latent TB Infection (LTBI) among populations at high-risk for TB
- Provides nursing assessments and nursing case management for clients who are tuberculin reactors or who have active tuberculosis. These duties include issuing and monitoring prescribed medications according to physician’s instructions and protocols. Schedules x-rays, collects sputum and blood specimens as necessary
- Orders medications from the State Pharmacy for active and latent TB cases
Other Duties
- Backs up clinical operations (FP provider, STI, TB)
- Submits EARS (Employee Activity Records) in a timely manner
- Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives
- Functions as a resource to professionals, paraprofessionals, support staff, and students
- Represents DOH-Charlotte through participation with agencies from state, county and municipalities, and community partners
- Contributes to the success of the agency’s Strategic Plan
- Performs other related duties in accordance with the needs of the organization and supervisor’s instruction
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Statutes, Rules and Regulations that pertain to the programs
- Ability to use equipment and supplies related to the position
- Knowledge of program development
- Ability to perform nursing functions related to assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of services provided to immunizations, STI/HIV, family planning and TB patients
- Knowledge of the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases of public health significance, prevention of diseases of environmental origin, prevention of injuries, promotion of healthy behaviors, response to disasters and assistance in the recovery, and providing access to health care
Qualifications:
- A valid Florida driver’s license and/or reliable transportation is required
- Licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes and in accordance with Rule 64B9, Florida Administrative Code is required
- Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)/Basic Life Support (BLS) or willingness to obtain certification from an approved CPR/BLS course within 90 days of employment is required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred
- Experience working in immunizations, STD/HIV or Family Planning program is preferred
- Public health experience is preferred
