Your Specific Responsibilities:
This position performs work administering all activities of the FDOH- St. Lucie County medical laboratory, including conducting laboratory tests to provide information for use in the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of diseases. Works with Lab Lead and Assistant Director of Nursing to ensure a smooth client flow for clients of all programs. Performs Laboratory testing and patient servicing in a Health Department laboratory at 1701 23rd Street or 5150 NW Milner Drive either alone or in cooperation with another technician. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Nursing.
Responsible for the laboratory operations and Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Waived lab. Monitors lab licenses for expiration. Performs in house testing, specimen collection & processing, reporting directly to providers, running controls, updating, and creating policies and procedures. Processes all labs from Community Based Organizations, clinic, Tuberculosis, and STD. Tracks outgoing labs and timeliness, Audits manifest daily to ensure accuracy. Prints waybill and sends specimens to State lab as often as needed. In the event the specimens are not picked up by UPS or Fed Ex then will drive specimens to UPS or Fed Ex for delivery to State lab. Serves as a main contact for State and contract labs. Follows & complies with HIPPA guidelines.
Collects body fluids including blood, urine, and other samples for various laboratory tests to provide information for diagnostic, treatment, and/or research decisions for all age groups. Performs phlebotomies. Reviews and prepares reports of test results. Provides negative lab results to patients when requested. Monitors HMS/eLab errors daily, corrects any errors found. Prepares specimens for transport, performs daily maintenance and cleaning of lab equipment, maintains laboratory logs, and performs proficiency testing.
Provides STD/HIV screenings to walk in clients and PEPW clients. Processes and tests HIV Test and Treat clients, processes and tests HIV exposed PrEP clients. Scans appropriate client information into HMS as needed.
Performs, logs and reports laboratory procedures with minimal supervision and in accordance with established lab guidelines. Maintain appropriate control in all laboratory sites. Runs and documents controls. Takes appropriate action on all “out of range” parameters prior to patient testing. Records lab results in the electronic medical record and immediately reports abnormal/critical results to a provider.
Checks and records temperatures on all regulated equipment. Maintains laboratory Quality Improvement Procedures. Reviews lab requisitions, encounters and specimen logs for completeness and accuracy. Maintains, rotates, inventories supply, and orders supplies as needed. Assists with billing and invoicing Quest and State labs as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be able to ambulate more than 100 feet, lift more than 20 pounds, bend, stand for more than 20 minutes. meetings, and community events throughout St. Lucie County. Must be adept at public speaking.
Qualifications:
Minimum:
- · Two years phlebotomy experience using both venipunctures evacuated system and butterfly method working in patient care clinical setting.
- · Experience drawing pediatric (children)
- · Experience in phlebotomy, using both venipunctures evacuated system and butterfly method.
- · Experience /knowledge of Laboratory Biohazard
- · Experience in specimen processing and shipping
- · Experience performing CLIA Waive Rapid testing.
Preferred:
- Medical laboratory Technician License
· Two years hands on patient care/phlebotomy
· Knowledge of laboratory terminology
· Knowledge of specimen processing
