Special Note: Work in the Women, Infant and Children (WIC) Program providing nutrition and breastfeeding counseling and education to pregnant, breastfeeding, post-partum women, infants and children under age 5 years. Professional Nutrition Educator assessing and evaluating nutritional status, writing nutrition care plans, providing nutrition counseling and education; certifying clients for the WIC program, developing nutrition education materials and/or classes and offering breastfeeding support to clients. Computer skills, productivity in clinic flow, provision of excellent customer service, team player and positive interpersonal relationships. 

 

Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provides excellent customer service to clients displaying courtesy and respect while expediting their visit to reduce wait time.  Provides nutrition counseling, nutrition education, referrals to healthcare and social services, breastfeeding promotion and support, and WIC certification services.
  • Certify clients for participation in the WIC program in accordance with policies of the state WIC program and regulations stated in DHM 150-24.  Provides nutrition education in a group or individual counseling in the areas of infant, childhood, prenatal, and post-natal including breastfeeding, nutrition, and physical activity to promote development and maintenance of good nutrition and lifestyle habits.  Develop, monitor, evaluate, and revise nutrition education plans for individual low risk and high-risk WIC program clients, not at medical nutritional risk.  Refer medical nutritional high risk clients to the appropriate Licensed Dietitian for counseling. Documents in FL-Wise electronic client records by end of business day.  In rare emergencies, a late entry note must follow local and state protocol. Documents in FL- Wise data system using SOAP format and other documentation guidelines; monitor accuracy of growth grids; distribute exempt formula to clients based on a valid medical condition and prescribed by a Physician/APRN/Physician Assistant.  Follow policies and procedures for collection, entry, and management of data.

 

  • Performs duties utilizing a teamwork approach to assure program objectives are coordinated with other staff to achieve desired results.  Cultivates positive work relationships with co-workers and communicates key information to supervisor and co-workers for efficient operations. Maintains client confidentiality and security in accordance DOHP50-10-10 Information Security & Privacy Policy Confidential Information.

 

  • Assist in other areas of the office to assure client services are provided efficiently.  Select, develop, and evaluate client nutrition education material.   Participates in the development, planning and carrying out of objectives/activities in the Bi-ennial Nutrition Program Plan.  Coordinate nutrition education services for assigned clients and makes referrals for appropriate services.  Assist with formulas inventory, receipt, storage, and transfer to sites as needed. Assists with Breastfeeding program activities as needed.

 

  • Participates in health fairs and WIC outreach activities.  Completes nutrition in-services for staff and the community.  Accurately completes all forms such as EARs in HMS, People First leave and attendance records, travel, etc., by the required deadlines.  Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service training, and professional and staff developmental activities. 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Including utilization of equipment, required for the position: customer service skills; computer skills- MS Word, MS Outlook, FL-Wise learn and be competent; communication skills, verbal and written; presentation skills; nutrition assessment/counseling/education skills.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Able to work the Special Needs Shelter
  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition or Dietetics.
  • At least four months of nutrition or nutrition student internship experience.
  • Computer skills and writing/speaking skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in the WIC Program.
  • Nutrition counseling skills and ability.
