Special Note: This position is work with the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program providing nutrition and breastfeeding assessment, counseling and education to pregnant women, breastfeeding women or post-partum women, infants, and children up to age 5 years.  Professional Nutritionist assessing and evaluating nutritional status, writing nutrition care plans, providing nutrition counseling and education; developing nutrition education materials and/or in-service classes; providing support for breastfeeding and referrals coordination.  Computer skills and provision of excellent customer service.

 

Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position provides nutritional assessment, education, and counseling to clients of the supplemental food program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program.

 

Provides excellent customer service to clients displaying courtesy and respect while expediting their visit to reduce wait time. Interviews WIC clients to certify for the WIC program per state WIC program policies and regulations stated in DHM 150-24.  Performs a nutritional assessment screening and analyzes medical and anthropometric data to determine nutritional risk eligibility. Monitors accuracy of completion of growth grids and measurement techniques by Health Support staff.  Develops client nutritional care plans to include from 1-3 client-centered goals and prescribes food packages. Documents in FL-Wise electronic client records by end of business day.  In rare emergencies, a late entry note must follow local and state protocol. Provides individual and group nutritional counseling and education.  Completes High-risk nutritional counseling referrals and counsels all medically high-risk WIC clients at least once per certification period. Refers clients and families as needed to other health and social service agencies. Distributes exempt infant formulas to WIC clients as prescribed by a Physician/APRN/Physician assistant per WIC program guidelines.   Handles receipt of exempt formula and distributes per local procedures. Promotes and supports breastfeeding; distributes breast pumps per guidelines and makes referrals to peer counselors and the Lactation Consultant.  Performs duties utilizing a teamwork approach to assure program objectives are coordinated with other staff to achieve desired results.  Cultivates positive work relationships with co-workers and communicates key concepts to supervisor and co-workers for efficient operations. Maintains client confidentiality and security in accordance DOHP50-10-10 Information Security & Privacy Policy Confidential Information.

Participates in formulation of nutrition education activities.  Coordinates the 2nd Nutrition Contact quarterly topic training with lesson plan and roll out of flip charts for WIC support staff as requested. Prepares and presents nutrition classes per agency objectives.  Coordinates and submits reports of non-WIC clients counseling.  Completes Quality Assurance of WIC Records per state and local guidelines on a regular basis for agency; documents observational reviews of WIC staff for competencies as assigned. Assists with the breast pump program.  Assists with formula inventory, receipt, and handling as requested. Assists SPHNS to assure prompt handling of exempt formula invoices. Assists with nutrition reports and analysis as assigned.

Participates in the development, community assessment and carrying out of Objectives of Biennial Nutrition Program Plan. Assists with orientation training for new WIC staff and/or student interns as needed and community presentations. Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service training, and other professional and staff developmental activities. 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Nutrition assessment, nutrition counseling, nutrition education and nutrition presentations.  Computer skills, time management, excellent communication skills, excellent customer service skills, coordination with co-workers and partners on common projects.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Registered Dietitian  
  • Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist in Florida
  • Excellent computer skills and writing/speaking skills.
  • Nutrition counseling skills and ability
  • Special Needs Shelter work for DOH

Preferred:

  • WIC Program work experience
  • Six months or more nutrition counseling/education experience
