The Division of Habitat & Species Conservation is comprised of six Sections and two offices. This position works within the Wildlife and Habitat Management Section of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Division of Habitat and Species Conservation.  

 

Minimum qualifications: A high school diploma and 8 years of relevant professional experience in a closely related biological field or laboratory program is required. A Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field can substitute for 4 of the 8 years of required experience.

Preferred qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

This is not an entry level position. Strong interpersonal skills are required to lead, supervise, and mentor employees, and to develop and leverage partnerships with other agencies. Strong land management skills are required to evaluate habitat conditions and prescribe and direct appropriate treatments. Applicant must have applied knowledge of wildlife population and habitat management techniques in Florida, particularly the application of prescribed fire and mechanical and chemical vegetation control. GIS and other technological skills are also requisite for this position, including a working knowledge of WHM programs (e.g., OBVM) and tracking databases (e.g., LMIS, SaMP). Strong administrative, organizational, and budget management skills are required to manage multiple projects and their associated budgets. These skills must be coupled with the ability to apply motivational techniques in personnel management to foster a favorable and productive working environment and consistently promote a cohesive team concept for successful implementation of management programs on the WMAs.

 

Description of Duties:

 An exciting opportunity exists for a Biological Administrator I to join the team of employees to serve as the South District Biologist for the following areas: Platt Branch and Hickey Creek Wildlife and Environmental Areas, Orange Hammock and Babcock-Webb Wildlife Management Areas, and the Babcock Ranch Preserve. As the South District Biologist, this position leads a talented team of dedicated staff to positively impact wildlife conservation and habitat management throughout the District and Region.

 

Specific duties include administering projects; developing and managing budgets and annual work plans; providing leadership and mentoring to staff, including direct supervision of three Lead Area Biologists, one Cooperative Area Biologist, and one part-time Fisheries and Wildlife Biologist II; providing oversight and participating in hydrologic restoration and habitat management activities, including prescribed fire; developing and promoting public use programs, including both hunting and non-hunting uses; setting management objectives consistent with agency directives; and writing reports and technical documents. The successful candidate will excel at communication and have a srtong drive to succeed.
