Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position ensures that all segments of school health services are performed in accordance with program descriptions and the school health plan through the direct supervision and maintenance of the goals, objectives, and all health services outlined in all school projects. This employee will report directly to the Nursing Director. Responsible for completing Timesheets and EAR's in a timely manner.  Responsible for the supervision of staff including appraisals, planning and directing their work, approving leave, and having the authority for hiring and taking disciplinary action or effectively recommending such actions.

Responsible for the direct supervision of school health staff which may include R.N., L.P.N., and Health Support Aides.

Responsible for day-to-day scheduling and staffing, visiting schools regularly to observe activities, and counseling with staff to ensure that services are provided in accordance with policies and procedures. Coordinates orientation of new school staff arranges in-services and staff development. Updates school health plan and submit all annual reports.  Serves as liaison between the school board, school personnel, and health department staff as well as interagency collaboration as needed to improve the health status of students through health services and health instruction. Gives technical assistance on school health issues as required. Serves on appropriate committees that will enhance school health services and intercede for school health needs. Provides in-service training and workshops for school personnel, participates in teaching planning activities and community health projects. Maintains countywide fluoride program and submits yearly report. Meets and reports to supervisor on a regular basis to give an update on activities in the school health program.

The incumbent provides public health nursing services for clients in Family Planning (FP) and Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) clinic within Gadsden County High School. This position is classified as a sensitive position.  Incumbent handles protected health information on a need-to-know basis following the Department of Health, HIPAA, and Information Security and privacy policy. 

Works independently to provide contraceptive services to women/adolescents attending Florida Department of Health Gadsden County clinics/school including review of methods, method starts, supply, and pregnancy testing. Consult with Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) as necessary.  Provides HIV counseling, testing, and preventive education following Department of Health (DOH) guidelines and triages clients who walk in.  Works with Advanced Registered Nurse practitioners assisting with care, examination, and treatment of clients.  Administers medications in the clinic under clinician’s orders and/or following DOH and Title X guidelines.  Evaluate individual needs and makes appropriate referrals as needed.  Completes monthly unknown method reports for the school health clinic. 

Will be trained as an active Epidemiology nurse to assist with reporting communicable disease conditions to the state health office Bureau of Epidemiology through direct phone reporting, Merlin case data entry, case investigations, and patient interviews.  The incumbent will also rotate on-call after-hour procedures with other epidemiology staff at FDOH-Gadsden.  Will assist with annual mandatory flu report and surveillance.

  • This occupation requires licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes and in accordance with Rule 64B9, Florida Administrative Code.
