Job Description

This position performs intermediate level work under the limited supervision of the Program Specialist Supervisor II-SES and provides support to the Office of Safe Schools in the implementation of the Department’s safe schools mission as established by the State Board of Education, the Commissioner of Education, and Legislature, through state goals, priority objectives, the Strategic Imperative Plan, and other policy and procedural directives related to K-12 education. This position supports the efforts of the Office of Safe Schools which serves as a central repository for best practices, training standards, and compliance oversight in all matters regarding school safety and security, including prevention efforts, intervention efforts, and emergency preparedness planning.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) has an open position that is responsible for executing the following functions:

 

  • Ensure statutory compliance through announced and unannounced inspections of public school facilities and school districts throughout the region.
  • Provide technical assistance in overseeing statewide use of, compliance with and documentation of required information within the Florida Safe School Assessment Tool (FSSAT) for both schools and school districts. Verifying accuracy and reliability of data received from district and/or schools.
  • Assist the Office with the updates and implementation of required reporting for safety, security, and discipline incidents.
  • Verify that reports displayed or generated are readable, capture required information and are functioning appropriately.
  • Conduct reviews of applications and district reports to identify technical and reporting problems.
  • Develop, review, and provide technical assistance materials and support regarding functionality, user management, and the data collection process for school district personnel.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to school districts regarding their implementation of the strategies and activities necessary to address findings.
  • Ensure that schools have adopted policies for reunification and that those policies are updated and reviewed annually.
  • Assist in the development of workshops and training for family reunification. Advise district partners regarding policies and procedures for school officials to prepare for and respond to natural and manmade disasters, including family reunification plans to reunite students and employees with their families after a school is closed or unexpectedly evacuated due to such disaster.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office, Smartsheet, and the Florida School Safety Assessment Tool for daily tasks supporting the Office of Safe Schools.
  • Provide technical support in the Office’s handling of school district audit findings, which includes timely review of audit findings, timely delegation of audit findings to other offices within the Department, and timely follow-up with districts for resolution.
  • Report violations or concerns of improper safety and security to proper authorities for corrective action.
  • Travel frequently within their assigned counties within the north region and occasionally to other regions within the state as needed. (multiple days each week and the employee will visit each county several times a month.
  • Assigned to visit schools in the following counties: Citrus, Levy, Marion, Flagler, Volusia, Alachua, Hernando, Sumter, Lake, Seminole, Pasco, Orange and Brevard.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Ability to understand, interpret and apply applicable Florida Administrative Codes and Florida Statutes.
    • Knowledge of safety and security standards and practices as applied to public schools and school districts.
    • Ability to compile, organize, and analyze data.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products to include Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Publisher.
    • Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
    • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
    • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

     

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • 2 years of professional experience in a position involving public contact.
    • Valid Florida Driver’s License
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
    • Ability to travel frequently within the state of Florida.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    Preferences will be given to applicants who have:

    • Have a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Education
    • Experience working with the State of Florida K–12 school districts or state education agencies.
    • Demonstrated experience in data management, reporting, or quality assurance related to safety, security, or compliance programs.
    • Familiarity with state or federal education reporting standards and regulations.

    SB 1310: Substitution of Work Experience for Postsecondary Education Requirements.

    • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or University in Education can substitute for 4 years of direct experience.

     

    Related work experience may not substitute for any licensure, certification, or registration required by an agency and indicated in the advertised job description.

    LEAVE INFORMATION:

    Annual Leave - Employees in Senior Management Service and Selected Exempt Service positions are credited with 176 hours of annual leave upon appointment. In subsequent years, the annual allotment is credited on the anniversary date of the initial appointment.
