Who are we?

FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.


How you will make an impact

The incumbent of this position serves as the instructional leader in the Early Learning Center Program (ELC-D/ELC-B) ensuring high quality services to children ages three to five and their families. This position is responsible for assuring compliance with all federal, state, Board of Trustee and Administrative mandates, guidelines, and rules within their respective unit. 


  • Responsible for supervising all staff working in the Early Learning Center Preschool program inclusive of both the deaf and the blind departments. Coordinate and conduct staff meetings to develop goals and priorities that lead to quality instructional programs. Supervise and support instructional program staff members by visiting classrooms, conduct formal and informal observations, conduct individual teacher conferences, provide high quality feedback, and complete staff evaluations. Review individual teacher’s lesson plans, review, and approve teacher’s individual professional development plans, ensure the adherence of state adopted curriculum/course frameworks for class instruction, and ensure instruction is differentiated and appropriate accommodations are being implemented according to students’ needs, IEP goals and accommodations.  Gather and analyze data on student performance. Review assessments, observe and provide professional input on specific children for purpose of identification of specific problems and referral for additional diagnostic or related evaluations. Supervise the monitoring of student behavior and support implementation of student behavior programming and plans. Ensure teachers and staff members maintain contact with family by informing them of upcoming activities, student progress and concerns. 
  • Participate in departmental meetings, student management team meetings, file reviews and student staffings when appropriate, prepare budget requests, and develop student/teacher schedules in a timely manner. Participates in staff development activities training as assigned. Responsible for ordering supplies, textbooks and materials and managing budget allocations appropriately. Report needed building repairs and safety hazards to the appropriate departments.
  • Oversee the completion of daily responsibilities such as student attendance, student accountability and safety, payroll, leave requests and other administrative tasks accurately and in a timely manner.  Coordinate with staff to ensure the efficient use of fiscal and human resources, and efficient use of physical facilities. 
  • Other duties, as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge in the instructional strategies related to the respective sensory impairment of the children within the instructional unit;
  • Knowledge of acceptable/current administrative, personnel and student management techniques;
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective communications;
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of teaching;
  • Knowledge of the principles of human learning, behavior and counseling;
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of curriculum development;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments;
  • Ability to communicate effectively;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • Ability to visually monitor students and staff;
  • Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during CPR and CPI;
  • Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24;



  • Master's degree or higher in related field.
  • Current state of Florida educator certification in Deaf or Hard of Hearing K-12, or visually impaired K-12, or ability to obtain within a reasonable period of time upon hire.
  • Current state of Florida educator certification in educational leadership K-12, school principal K-12, or administration and supervision, or ability to obtain within a reasonable period of time upon hire.
  •  Five years professional experience in related field.     

      If certification(s) noted are not from Florida, upon appointment, shall obtain state of Florida certification(s) within a reasonable period of time.

 Additional requirements mandated by state/federal law and position responsibilities.

Sign Language Requirements

Applicants who are selected for hire will be required to attain an Advanced proficiency in sign language within one year of hire.

Please note: The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind provides education to acquire sign language skills.


Hiring Salary Range: 11 month position, $51,889.37 - $59,389.37 annually. This range is inclusive of verified experience and education.

Hours: Monday – Friday 7:30am to 4:30pm (at least 80 hours biweekly)
