Section: Marine Fisheries Research - Fisheries Dependent Monitoring

This position, located in St. Petersburg, supports the gathering of information to manage marine fisheries in Florida. The duties are varied and diverse. 

NOTE: Employment in this position is contingent upon a satisfactory criminal history check. The criminal history check must be completed prior to employment.  (FWC will pay for the fingerprint scan.)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Duties include a combination of answering telephones, contacting wholesale and retail dealers and fishermen, bookkeeping, word processing, data entry, office machine operation, filing and other basic office functions. Effective oral and written communication and math skills are essential in this position.

EXAMPLES OF WORK  

Review and edit data forms submitted by wholesale and retail dealers; perform data entry of data forms; compute, record and proofread data and other information; look up and retrieval of information from computer databases; operation of office machines (computers, fax machine, copiers, etc.); answer telephones, respond to requests, and deliver messages; review files, records, and other documents to obtain information to respond to requests; compose and type letters and other correspondence to commercial fishermen and dealers; mailing of materials such as letters, packages, reporting forms (trip tickets), and new dealer packets; filing.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES  

Knowledge of basic math, identification and gathering of essential information, and administrative and clerical procedures and systems.  Basic skill in the use of word processing software and equipment, computers, spreadsheets, databases, and typing.  Ability to work quickly and accurately, organize and prioritize work, follow verbal and written instructions, establish and maintain effective working relationships, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and interact with the public effectively.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of secretarial or clerical work experience.  College education can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours for each year of the required work experience.  Vocational/technical training in the area of secretarial science or office/business studies can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours for each year of the required work experience.  A highschool diploma or its equivalent can substitute for one year of the required work experience.
