The incumbent must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) within six (6) months of appointment.

Occasional to moderate travel required. Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.

The incumbent of this position is subject to pre-employment, post-accident, random and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Federal Highway Administration Rule, Title 49, Part 382 CFR.

Successful completion of a drug test is a condition of employment in the position in accordance with Section 112.0455 F.S. “Drug Test” means any chemical, biological or physical instrumental analysis administered for the purpose of determining the presence or absence of a drug or its metabolites.


The anticipated hiring salary for this position is $27,479.40 annually.


Performs major and minor repairs on all types of equipment assigned to the Suwannee District Center, and specifically the JMBSF and the MFS.  Repairs both gasoline and diesel powered equipment systems, such as fuel systems, cooling systems, drive and hydraulic systems on crawler tractors, heavy construction equipment, light, medium and heavy duty trucks, as well as other automotive and off-road equipment.  Repairs power trains, transmissions, clutches, air and hydraulic braking systems, and suspension systems on all types of equipment specified above.

Assists in implementation and constant review of the preventive maintenance program. This includes providing technical assistance to operators and supervisors to improve efficiency and quality of the program.  Provides continuous instruction to operators/supervisors in the proper operation/maintenance of equipment. Responsible for the quality of all preventive maintenance services performed by operators and others for the equipment assigned to the JMBSF and MFS.

Uses specialized tools and diagnostic equipment to diagnose drivability and performance problems of equipment assigned to the JMBSF, the MFS, and the District as needed.  Uses welders, cutting torches and various other metal working equipment in the repair of both steel and aluminum components.

Accurately prepares work orders for all work performed and follows up to completion, for an accurate account of all parts, labor and materials used. Initiates, prepares, and completes field purchase orders or P-card purchases for parts and supplies. Assists the supervisor in ensuring all work performed by operators and others has an accurate work order prepared before completion.

Studies technical publications, specifications and repair procedures. Completes all training developed by the division and deemed appropriate for position. Seeks self-improvement through classes, seminars, etc., that are job related. Participates in the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification program as time and circumstances permit. Serves as mentor and teacher to less senior mechanics and operators.

Is prepared to perform all repairs in the field environment when situations dictate.  Is willing and able to deploy to other areas for up to two weeks during extreme fire conditions, natural disasters, and other situations deemed necessary by the Center Manager.

Responsible for the accountability of all tools, test equipment and parts used in the daily performance of duties. Responsibilities extend to include helping the supervisor account for tools, parts and supplies used by operators and others as much as possible.
