Class Title: OPS Medical Technologist I

Base Salary: $16.50/hour

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Operations and Management Consultant II-SES, the incumbent to this position will provide a variety of health services, client coordination and clerical/administrative duties and responsibilities within the clinical and communicable disease areas of the Florida Department of Health in Seminole County.  Duties will include but are not limited to the following:

 

Vital Signs & Specimen Collection: Collects patients’ blood pressure, temperature, pulse oximetry, respiratory rate and heart rate. The incumbent to this position will collect samples and specimens of blood, urine and other bodily fluids ordered by clinical representative as required for analysis.  The incumbent to this position will be responsible for the timeliness and accuracy of each collection.  He/she will ensure proper placement/distribution of lab requisition for input into both State and other Lab systems.

 

Administrative & Clerical: Inputting of laboratory test requests/updated into HMS, LabCorp, and Quest Programs, assisting in the receipt and distribution of laboratory test results, and ordering/purchasing of laboratory/administrative supplies. Completes data entry as needed for the following duties which include, but are not limited to client registration, scheduling, and service coding entry. Completes other administrative support tasks as assigned.

 

Packaging & Shipping of Specimens: The incumbent to this position will maintain responsibility in the proper wrapping, packaging, labeling, and shipping of all laboratory specimens being sent off site for analysis.  He/she will ensure proper manifest inclusion, establishment of tracking and distribution/filing of shipping information. 

 

In-House Tests: The incumbent to this position will maintain responsibility in the conduction of in-house testing, to include pregnancy tests, clean catches, and finger sticks.  The incumbent will maintain responsibility for initiating, analyzing, completing and logging results within the tracking mechanisms implemented.  Results will be provided to clinical representatives in a timely fashion and copies filed.

 

Equipment Validation: The incumbent to this position will maintain responsibility for the review and verification of laboratory equipment, ensuring consistent testing of equipment and analysis of results.  He/she will notify the proper staff member of any discrepancies so that follow up actions may be taken.

 

Outreaches: Participates in health fairs and community events to provide clinical services, education and other functions as needed.

 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the principles of biology, chemistry, and physics. Knowledge of medical technology practices and procedures. Knowledge of the types of laboratory tests. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing procedures. Knowledge of chemicals and reagents. Knowledge of the significance of laboratory tests. Skill in operating laboratory and scientific equipment for conducting tests. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Willing to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. This may include working in a special needs or Red Cross shelter, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural. Emergency duties may also include in-state and/or out-of-state deployment. 

Preferred:

  • Verifiable clinical laboratory experience in a medical setting (hospital, clinic, doctor office or health department)
  • Experience in phlebotomy in a medical setting (hospital, clinic, doctor office or health department)
  • Phlebotomy certificate or willing to take the course with 6 months of hiring
  • Verifiable experience submitting laboratory test orders in an electronic system
