Your Specific Responsibilities:

The OPS Dental Hygienist is responsible for helping the Department of Health Sarasota County (DOH-Sarasota) achieve its vision “To protect, promote & improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county & community efforts” and its mission “Healthiest State in the Nation”.  The OPS Dental Hygienist in this position, will assist the Dental Hygienist in the School-Based Dental Sealant Program and other agency dental initiatives. This position reports to the Dental Hygienist of the Department of Health in Sarasota County.

The incumbent will be responsible to assist the School-Based Dental Sealant team in the coordination and performance of the School-Based Dental Sealant Program.

    • Review all documents for completed consent forms to provide services to each child participant, confirming parent/guardian signature
    • Provide preventive dental hygiene services using portable dental equipment, primarily within a school setting, but not limited to that setting and may include children centers
    • Provide preventive dental hygiene services for school-age children with reasonable proficiency, such as dental sealants, dental prophylaxis, fluoride treatments, and provide age-appro oral hygiene instruction and nutritional guidance
    • Screen and provide preventive services to at least 4 children per hour, as school schedules permit, with minimum, an 80% sealant retention rate for one year
    • Interact effectively with school-age children, addressing questions, fears, and behavioral issues
    • Lift and carry 50 lbs. with ergonomic awareness, using standard safety measures.  Assemble, disassemble, and transport portable dental equipment to and from school settings with time and proficiency, based on distance in county designated vehicle
    • Drive county vehicle responsibly, obeying Florida traffic regulations
    • Represent the Florida Department of Health Sarasota County in a positive, professional, and informative manner, using an interpreter when necessary
    • Participate in community and school programs, including health fairs, outreach projects and field projects, and represent Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County (FDOH-Sarasota), as well as, effectively interacting with the school nurse, school staff, principal, parents, and students
    • Communicate program problems with the Dental Hygienist no later than the next business day, such as but not limited to supply shortage, equipment malfunction and troublesome interpersonal interactions
    • Provide parent/student education on Silver Diamine Fluoride 
    • Apply Silver Diamine Fluoride, when applicable
    • Provide oral exams through Tele-dentistry to fifth grade students and expand to additional grades in the future
    • Provide dental cleanings to fifth grade students and expand to additional grades in the future
    • Complete mandated forms and/or accurately enter computerized data
    • Submit forms to be billed on schedule as per fiscal department            
    • Coordinate services with the Dental Assistant
    • Perform all duties within the scope of a Dental Hygiene License as set forth within by the State of Florida Board of Dentistry
    • Provides and/or oversees dental hygiene services to eligible clients of DOH-Sarasota County as requested and needed.
    • Attend staff meetings in person or via teleconference.
    • Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives.
    • Comply with all DOH-Sarasota County required trainings.
    • Update EAR’s (Employee Activity Record) on time and submit timesheets weekly through People First

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to properly use, maintain and set up dental equipment/instruments, prepare patient, sterilize, and disinfect instruments
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. with ergonomic awareness and using standard safety measures
  • Ability to provide effective and age-appropriate Dental Health education
  • Ability to perform basic computer operations
  • Ability to work independently
  • Effective written and verbal English communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Time management skills

 

Qualifications:

Minimum –

  • Active Florida Dental Hygienist license
  • Valid Florida driver license, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment
  • Associate degree
  • One year of experience providing preventive dental hygiene services
  • One year of experience working with school aged children

Preferred –

  • Experience documenting accurate and complete dental hygiene services into a computer database
  • Familiarity with a School-based Dental Sealant program
