Description of Position Being Filled:


This job posting seeks to fill an Assistant State Attorney position. The State Attorney’s Office, 12th Judicial Circuit, serves the citizens of Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto Counties.


Assistant State Attorneys are responsible for prosecuting criminal cases and an applicant must possess an interest in being a trial lawyer and have excellent communication and critical thinking skills.  Applicants must also have the time management and organizational skills required to manage a caseload.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:


  • Conduct jury trials, non-jury trials, preliminary and pretrial hearings, and other related courtroom proceeding.
  • Investigate, evaluate, and prepare cases for trial
  • Legal Research and Writing
  • Communicate with and serve as a liaison to victims, their family members, witnesses, and law enforcement personnel
  • Other relevant work as required


These duties involve prosecutorial criminal casework requiring preparation of legal documents, legal research, taking of depositions, and interviewing of witnesses, victims, and other parties to ascertain facts of case for prosecution. Trial work includes case preparation for court presentation, examining and cross-examining witnesses/defendants/victims, and summarizing cases for presentation for jury and non-jury trials. The position requires professional interaction with the public, law enforcement, and office staff.


It further requires proficient management of detailed case work and the ability to use office computer software and equipment frequently in a paperless, electronic environment. Applicant must have knowledge and ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Duties also require the employee to perform various frequent and repetitive actions/duties in use of computer programs/keyboards and telephone. Ability to work independently and as a team and regular, in-office attendance are required. Travel may be required.


For attorneys who are members of the Florida Bar, entry level positions start at $72,000 annually.

  • 3L Students (preference may be given to those with Certified Legal Intern Status,  however, such status is not required), or
  • Those that are eligible to be certified under Rule 11 of the Rules Governing the Florida Bar, or
  • Those that have taken the Florida bar exam and are awaiting results, or
  • Florida Bar Member in Good Standing
