Who are we?

FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf or hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.

 

How you will make an impact:

The incumbent in this position is responsible for the identification and evaluation of Deaf or hard of Hearing (D/HH) and Blind/Visually Impaired (B/VI) English Language Learners (ELL) students enrolled at the school.

 

 

  • Attend IEP meetings of ELL students. Monitor ELL students while testing in all departments (ACCESS for ELLs). Monitor students for two (2) years after exiting the ESOL Program. Provide pull-out or push-in services and/or teach ELL classes. Conduct annual assessment on all ELL students.
  • Conduct file review of all possible ELL students for the intake process. Determine placement for ELL students and make necessary documentation. Conduct ELL assessment upon request (referral). Write reports for ELL assessment requested through referral.
  • Provide ELL training for FSDB staff as needed. Attend workshops and conferences.
  • Communicate with parents through phone calls and emails. Attend International Relations Committee meetings.
  • Attend trainings/meetings and implement skills acquired during professional development activities as required by Federal, State and FSDB mandates.

 

  • Other additional duties as assigned.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

  • Ability to implement and maintain individual programs for students; Ability to write and speak fluently in Spanish and English;
  • Ability to use and understand American Sign Language (ASL) at an Intermediate level;
  • Ability to assist students;
  • Ability to maintain records;
  • Ability to write reports;
  • Ability to plan and prepare educational materials;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • Ability to assist in the classroom with ELL students and/or students;
  • Ability to use computer and software programs;
  • Knowledge and experience with working with ESOL D/HH and B/VI students;
  • Ability to conduct staff training in the area of ESOL;
  • Ability to pass training and administer skills acquired during CPI and CPR;
  • Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24;

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in related field
  • Current state of Florida educator certificate in ESOL or ESOL Endorsement or ability to obtain within a reasonable period of time upon hire.
  • Three years professional teaching experience with students who are deaf or hard of hearing or blind/visually impaired.

 

 

Additional requirements mandated by state/federal law and position responsibilities.

 

Sign Language Requirements:

Applicants who are selected for hire will be required to attain an Advanced proficiency in sign language within one year of hire.

 

Please note: FSDB provides education to acquire sign language skills.

 

 

Hiring Salary Range: 10-month position (190 Days): $54,967.24 - $58,959.60. This range is inclusive of verified experience. Employees shall receive compensation for higher education beyond a Bachelor’s Degree as noted below.

 

Master’s Degree: additional $2,400

Master’s +30, or 2nd Master’s Degree, or Education Specialist, or Doctorate Degree: additional $2,400

 

Employees may earn any combination of degrees and receive that amount. Only one degree in each category will apply.

 

Hours: Monday – Friday; 8:00am to 4:00pm
