Who are we?

FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.

 

 

How you will make an impact

The incumbent of this position is responsible for the skilled preparation of various foods required to support the menus served at FSDB.

  • Responsible for preparing a variety of foods that include baking, preparing meat, poultry and fish for cooking by cutting, slicing, grinding, or preparing and cooking vegetables, soups, sandwiches, sauces and other items.  Estimates batch cooking of foods to ensure optimal products. Follows written and oral instructions.
  • Maintains work area at a high standard of sanitation and safety according to all applicable rules and regulations.  Wears a clean uniform, hair restraint and gloves as required. Perform cleaning as required and directed: warewash, wiping, shining, sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, and sanitizing all surfaces in food service kitchens and dining rooms.
  • Operates various kitchen equipment such as slicers, grinders, ovens, grill, steam kettles, blenders, mixers and other large and small equipment.  Assists with storage of food and supply deliveries. Following all required regulations for food service workers by the CDC and FSDB OPP for a safe and sanitary food environment.
  • Serves food to staff and visitors for regular and special events.
  • Maintains required Food Service records such as production statistics, meal counts, temperature logs and other related information. Requisitions supplies as instructed.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the equipment, procedures and techniques used in cooking and baking;
  • Knowledge of the procedures for maintaining sanitary working conditions;
  • Ability to perform food service functions in cooking and baking;
  • Ability to read, follow recipes and/or other written instructions,
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • Ability to perform manual work at an industrious pace;
  • Ability to use a step stool;
  • Ability to work with, and knowledge of, cleaning chemicals;
  • Ability to work in refrigerator or freezer for up to 20 minutes;
  • Persons appointed to this position must be reasonably expected to have and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during demanding situations encountered on the job without compromising their health and well-being or that of their fellow co-workers;
  • Ability to stand, stoop, walk, lift heavy objects (up to 50lb bags of food products and/or trash, with our without assistance) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday;
  • Ability to visually monitor work area to ensure cleanliness as required by Federal/State standards;
  • Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during CPR.
  • Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24;

 

Qualifications

Commercial kitchen or food service experience. Serve Safe Certification.

 

Sign Language Requirements

Applicants who are selected for hire will be encouraged to learn sign language.

Please note: The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind provides education to acquire sign language skills.

 

Hiring Salary Range 10 month position: $26,145.60 - $29,145.60 annually. (paid biweekly over 26-pays) This range is inclusive of verified experience and education.

Hours Monday-Friday 10:30am to 7:00pm
