TITLE:  OPS Biological Scientist II

This position is subject to annual renewal for funding.


Coordinate data collection on the State Reef Fish Survey both regionally and statewide.  Conduct Quality control checks on all data collected for the State Reef Fish Survey.  Visually QC 25% of all datasheets to ensure all Regions are conducting the survey according to protocol, correcting any errors that may arise.  Make sure the field manual is up to date and current with changing procedures.  Train new regional sampling staff and conduct quality control checks in the field, both regionally and statewide.  Offer additional training in sampling protocols as needed.  Overnight travel will be required when conducting statewide quality control checks in the field.  Compile, edit, code and process angler intercept data forms for the Saint Petersburg region.  Conduct recreational angler surveys at boat docks and public boat ramps when needed; identify species, measure, and weigh recreational catches; collect biological samples from marine fish for stock assessments and genetic analysis; process samples and data in a timely manner. Participate in appropriate outreach activities, including providing outreach materials to recreational anglers during the conduct of recreational fishing surveys and representing the Agency in a courteous and professional manner.  Must be able to work well independently and as part of a team.  This position will be at least 30 hours per week with some work on weekends and will be based out of FWRI in St. Petersburg, FL.  To learn more about the project we are hiring for, visit: https://myfwc.com/research/saltwater/fishstats/srfs/program/



A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences and one year of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program; or a master's degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences.

*4 years professional experience in a direct related biological field or laboratory program can substitute for the required bachelor’s degree;  additional years of expeience as described above are also required.  Valid driver license.




Knowledge of: fish morphology and identification of marine fish; sampling methods and data collection. Ability to: communicate to the public effectively with tact and diplomacy; to gather, maintain, and analyze data; maintain field sampling equipment; establish and maintain effective work relationships; operate a computer and software such as spreadsheets and word processing; experience working with large datasets; programming skills are preferred but not required; think logically and apply problem-solving techniques; communicate effectively verbally and in writing, work under adverse conditions in the field, maintain a valid driver’s license, and work weekends and holidays as needed.


This position requires the candidate to have successful completion of a level 1 background check at no cost to the candidate prior to hire.
