Your Specific Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be an OPS Phlebotomist who works in the Medical Services Division at the St. Petersburg Health Department.  This position works in the lab doing phlebotomy and processing specimens for in house testing and transport to outside lab(s). 

 Phlebotomy

  • Performs Laboratory testing and patient servicing in a Health Department laboratory either alone or in cooperation with another lab employee 
  • Performs daily maintenance of equipment
  • Maintains a clean and disinfected environment in lab at all times
  • Prepares specimens for transport to outside labs
  • Records and maintains records and  results as required by Florida statutes
  • Requisitions supplies as needed
  • Results of lab testing performed is recorded timely and accurately in Electronic Medical Record
  • Performs venipuncture’s, urine collection and finger sticks for all clinics on all age groups
  • Responsible for quality control of lab testing and equipment (within the Phlebotomist’s scope of practice)
  • Helps coordinate laboratory flow with clinic nursing supervisor and/or Center Manager
  • Notifies the Supervisor and/or the Center Manager immediately of any quality issues and client concerns

 

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Completes:  E-lab requisitions as ordered
  • Enters HMS service codes on the date the service has been provided.
  • Prepares clinical area for services prior to session: maintains a clean work area before, during and after services;

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and utilization of equipment
  • Knowledge of medical terminology;
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, utilizing approved DOH abbreviations when documenting in the electronic medical record.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and appropriate medical documentation in electronic medical record.
  • Ability to work with persons of a different race, language, culture, or socioeconomic status. 
  • Ability to perform successful venipuncture in 2 attempts or less.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum

  • Graduation from Phlebotomy Program
  • 1 year experience working with an electronic medical record
  • 3 months’ experience doing phlebotomy

Preferred

  • 1 year experience working in a medical office or hospital setting
  • Experience with CLIA waived testing AND performing quality controls.
