The Florida Youth Challenge Academy’s mission is to provide a highly disciplined and motivational environment, free from outside distractions, which fosters academics, leadership, development, personal growth, self-esteem, and physical fitness for qualifying high school dropouts. The Academy consists of an operational staff and cadre with in-depth military experience, certified instructors from the Clay County School District system, a registered nurse, counselors and recruitment and placement personnel.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  1. New employees of the Department of Military Affairs will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  2. New employees of the Department of Military Affairs are required to participate in a direct deposit/electronic transfer program. 
  3. The Department of Military Affairs is paid on a monthly basis.
  4. This position is a Cooperative Agreement position.
  5. As a CANDIDATE, you may be required to provide documentation (i.e., High School Diploma or Equivalency, College Transcripts, ETC.) to verify meeting these Minimum Qualifications.
  6. Must be able to pass a Department of Juvenile Justice Background screening/test.
  7. Must have and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver’s License.
  8. Must possess or be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification within six months of employment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent; AND
  • Two years of basic professional experience involving electrical, plumbing, heating, air-conditioning systems, or structural and architectural systems.
  • Must currently possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within 2 months of hire a First Aid/CPR Certification.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to bend, squat, climb, kneel, twist, grasp, push, and pull. 
  • Must have manual dexterity with hands and fingers.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs. or more.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position is responsible for maintenance and repairs to buildings and equipment at the Florida Youth ChalleNGe Academy. This will include operation of trucks, busses, lawn mowing equipment, and small tractors.
  • Maintenance of facilities to include repairing interior drywall, trim, doors, exterior repairs and improvements. Painting as required.
  • Maintenance of equipment to include keeping all mowers, edger, string trimmer, etc. in good working order and on a regular preventative maintenance schedule.
  • Maintenance of all Academy vehicles to include all vans, trucks, and busses, air/heat systems to include a regular preventative maintenance schedule.
  • Maintenance of grounds to include: Mowing lawns, edging sidewalks, general pest control, and campus beautification
  • Moving equipment as required.
  • Troubleshooting and repair of electric motors and pumps on washing machines and dryers.
  • Minor plumbing to include unclogging toilets and drains, repairing plumbing lines and fixtures and water heaters.
  • Minor troubleshooting and repairs to air conditioning and heating units.
  • Minor electrical to include changing light bulbs or installing lighting to existing electrical source.
  • Assists Hazardous Materials Officer and Safety Officer in control of HAZMAT and conducting safety inspections.
  • Supervision of cadets while assigned to maintenance work details.
  • Supervision of Cadets during Academy function requirements as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the skilled building trades or mechanical repair work.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures required in maintenance and repair work.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials programs.
  • Knowledge in safety programs.
  • Skill in using tools and equipment in maintenance and repair work.
  • Skills in troubleshooting and repairs of small engines and electric motors.
  • Skills in maintenance and repair of irrigation systems and equipment.
  • Ability to perform a variety of skilled trades functions.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Ability to install, maintain and repair electric motors, small engines, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to take accurate measurements.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
