The Florida Youth Challenge Academy’s mission is to provide a highly disciplined and motivational environment, free from outside distractions, which fosters academics, leadership, development, personal growth, self-esteem, and physical fitness for qualifying high school dropouts. The Academy consists of an operational staff and cadre with in-depth military experience, certified instructors from the Clay County School District system, a registered nurse, counselors and recruitment and placement personnel.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  1. New employees of the Department of Military Affairs will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  2. New employees of the Department of Military Affairs are required to participate in a direct deposit/electronic transfer program. 
  3. The Department of Military Affairs is paid on a monthly basis.
  4. This position is a Cooperative Agreement position.
  5. As a CANDIDATE, you may be required to provide documentation (i.e., High School Diploma or Equivalency, College Transcripts, ETC.) to verify meeting these Minimum Qualifications.
  6. Must be able to pass a Department of Juvenile Justice Background screening/test.
  7. Must have and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver’s License.
  8. Must possess or be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification within six months of employment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of professional administrative experience; AND
  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience.
  • Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Education may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Two (2) years of recruiting experience.
  • Three (3) years of customer service and sales experience.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises a staff of 11 State employees.
  • Oversees the daily Operations of the Recruitment, Mentor and Placement Department.
  • Responsible for overall recruiting efforts for each course, placement of Cadets after graduation, Cadet / Mentor matching, training of Mentors, and oversight of Post-Residential activities.
  • Attends all academy’s staff meetings and provides updates to the Director in current and upcoming events.
  • Oversees the scheduling of Mentors visits with Cadets.
  • Oversees the scheduling and execution of all curriculums pertaining to Voting Registration, Mentor Training and Department of Juvenile Justice mandatory classes.
  • Monitors and oversees the residential and post-residential phases on all active cadets.
  • Attends and oversees all mentor training events, academy orientations, candidates’ interview sessions and admissions day activities.
  • Reviews and approves all time and attendance for the RPM Department employees in the People First system.
  • Responsible for generating required quarterly reports to the Department of Juvenile Justice on active Cadets that are previously registered with DJJ.
  • Responsible for generating required monthly report to the Department of Children and Families Services on active Cadets that are previously registered with DCF.
  • Reviews and certifies the Department of Juvenile Justice background investigation reports on all juvenile applicants prior to admission into the academy.
  • Reports to the Director of the academy on a regular basis on the number of active applications received and approved for the upcoming scheduled classes.
  • Verifies all recruitment missions by the RPM Assistant/Recruiter.
  • Verifies required documentation on all applicants and provides guidance to the Director on the eligibility status for acceptance into the program.
  • Coordinates all campus visits to include interviews of applicants, academy tours and Mentor training classes and visits.
  • Assists with initiating and developing policy material.  Makes administrative decisions on program policy and its application and interpretation.  Directs the quality and quantity of work in professional and volunteer (Mentor) services including screening, marketing, education and training.  Plans programs to establish long and short-term goals.
  • Provides feedback to the Information Management Specialist on FLYCA website events announcements.
  • Identifies assigned staff to his / her department to provide assistance during all Cadets placement passes.
  • Identifies and present nominees to the Director of the academy for the Mentor of the Year Award twice a year.
  • Ensures that all Cooperative Agreement requirements for graduation are met (i.e. Citizenship Components, Mentor Match Components and Placement Components) by dateline date.
  • Oversees the Academy’s Military Career Day activities twice per year.
  • Oversees the Academy’s Student Government Association voting procedures, selection process and induction ceremony.  Reports to the Director of the academy all Cadets - SGA members discipline violations and recommendations for termination from the SGA.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:

  • May be required to work occasional weekends (which may require flexing of schedule to maintain 40 hour week). Expect during interviews and orientations for work hours to vary. 
  • Must be available for travel about 15% of the time to attend training courses and certifications.  
  • Position will require travel overnight and supervision of Cadets for events and orientations.
  • Incumbent may frequently be exposed to aggressive / hostile at-risk youths and / or upset parents / guardians.
  • Incumbent must possess or be able to obtain certification in CPR, Gang Awareness, and Sexual Harassment training/certification within 90 days of employment and be able to re-certify once a year.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects or equipment to and from recruiting sessions.
  • Must be able to kneel, reach, stand, crouch, push, stoop, pull, or grasp.
