Assistant Director, Academic Affairs (01058)

The Assistant Director of Academic Affairs serves as part of a team that provides direct professional support to the Director of Planning and Policy, the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Economic Development, the Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, the Chancellor, and the Board of Governors, and the twelve institutions in the State University System (SUS) on academic issues that affect the SUS.  Additionally, all ASA staff members work closely with the Board of Governors and university colleagues, as well as other educational, governmental, business, and community partners, to address SUS-level concerns and opportunities.

The Assistant Director of Academic Affairs provides direct professional support on matters related to academic degree program coordination and approval.  The Assistant Director also provides ongoing oversight of assigned policy issues and program areas and conducts academic policy research and analysis.  The Assistant Director also provides professional support to academic policy committees and councils through planning work processes, chairing/participating in meetings, and effectively communicating findings and recommendations to leadership.  While this position does not directly supervise any employees, the Assistant Director may lead or participate in teams to complete various assignments.

       Responsibilities, duties, and activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Reviewing proposals and making recommendations regarding academic degree programs at State universities (e.g., the approval of doctoral and professional programs, common prerequisites, and limited access status).
  • Coordinating and conducting program review activities throughout the State University System, providing technical assistance and policy oversight.
  • Managing various databases and inventories associated with the unit.
  • Providing direct support for Board Committees by preparing agendas, agenda items, supporting documents, presentations, reports, minutes, and other materials and background information.
  • Conducting academic and student affairs policy analyses, including reviewing legislative bills, administrative regulations, guidelines for standard practice, and special reports.
  • Providing staff support on critical academic policies and procedures, including but not limited to residency, admissions, articulation, and graduation.
  • Providing direct customer service to SUS students, staff, faculty, parents/family members, other education sector staff members, legislators, legislative staff, and members of the general public.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, public policy, or other related fields.
  • Five years of academic or professional experience at a college or university or education-related agency.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced ability to analyze and present data into succinct written reports, presentations, visuals, and other materials suitable for a board, legislative, or lay audience.
  • Experience using PC, Windows, and designated software (e.g., Word, Excel, & PowerPoint) and other databases.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively.

Preferred Requirements

  • Doctorate degree in higher education, public policy, or other related fields.
  • Understanding of the legislative process.
  • Conducting in-depth studies and developing assessment materials, reports, statistical analyses, and other documents related to various policy areas as needed.
