Job Description
The Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) of Academic and Student Affairs provides leadership for directing, planning, organizing and monitoring academic programs and student services for the 28 Florida College System institutions under the supervision of the Executive Vice Chancellor (EVC).
The AVC exercises independent judgment in executing policies and procedures in accordance with Florida Statutes and State Board of Education rules, which impact academic education and students in the Florida College System, as well as other levels of public and private education. This position supervises the Academic Affairs Officer, the Director of Federal Programs and Student Affairs Compliance, and the Academic and Student Affairs Program Coordinator, while providing leadership over strategic initiatives in academic programs and student services. The AVC will use evidence-based practices and take into consideration local, regional and national data and information to support effective Academic and Student Affairs programs.
As a direct report to the EVC, the AVC provides leadership and coordination for appropriate statewide committees and institutional partners relating to Florida College System academic programs and students, including academic issues relating to acceleration, transfer/articulation, developmental education, distance education, curriculum and instruction, textbook affordability and testing as well as student issues relating to admissions, advising, enrollment, financial aid, foster care, homelessness, residency for tuition purposes, and veterans. The AVC works closely with colleagues in the EVC’s unit, as well as staff in the Office of Articulation, the Board of Governors and the Division of Career and Adult Education in coordinating the shared implementation of Division of Florida Colleges programs under his or her purview.
Duties and Responsibilities

The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) has an open position that is responsible for executing the following functions:
- Provides staff support for the Executive Vice Chancellor (EVC) in the development of Division-related policies.
- Represents the Chancellor or the EVC as requested at public forums on issues relating to the State Board of Education and the Florida College System.
- Represents the Chancellor or the EVC as requested on task forces and various other groups and serves to interpret state college activities in the areas of academic and student services programs to the public, the Florida Legislature and other governmental agencies.
- Analyzes Florida Statutes, State Board of Education rules and other policy statements regarding academic programs in the Florida College System and other levels of public education; identifies issues; assists in the formulation of policies; drafts and reviews proposed legislation and applicable bill analyses.
- Identifies, develops, recommends, and implements policies and procedures for the Florida College System that relate to the areas of responsibility within Academic Affairs and Student Affairs.
- Provides technical assistance to the colleges and coordinates statewide activities in the area of student services programs.
- Ensures that programs in the areas of academic and student services administered by the Department are executed properly and timely and in accordance with applicable Florida Statutes and State Board of Education Rules, including, but not limited to, baccalaureate program and Specialized Associate in Arts Transfer degree reviews, statutorily required reports and Civil Rights reviews and federal reporting.
- Coordinates with the Division of Career and Adult Education and the Director of Workforce and Academic Alignment on college credit program/curriculum issues of mutual interest/responsibility in the area of workforce education.
- Serves as liaison with Chief Academic Officers and Chief Student Affairs Officers at all 28 Florida College System institutions, Articulation Coordinating Committee, the Board of Governors, and other stakeholders external to the Department on issues related to Academic and Student Affairs.
- Collaborates with internal stakeholders such as the Division of Public Schools, Office of Articulation, and the Division of Accountability, Research and Measurement on issues related to Academic and Student Affairs.
- Works closely with Division of Florida Colleges staff and cross-sector counterparts to develop and coordinate Division efforts to maximize highest student achievement within the Florida College System.
- Monitors educational outcomes and labor market data to identify best practices or other opportunities for the development and introduction of new academic programs and strategic initiatives to improve outcomes.
- Participates in special studies and creates reports related to postsecondary public education for other educational units, commissions and the Legislature as requested by the Executive Vice Chancellor and Division Leaders.
- Performs other duties and assignments as requested by the Executive Vice Chancellor

Minimum Qualifications:
- Four (4) years of direct experience in college education
- Four (4) years of direct experience in supervising
- Experience in creating and conducting training courses
- Experience with public speaking
Preferred Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in college education
- A master’s degree in college education
- Three (3) years of direct experience working in college administration or a college leadership position

LEAVE INFORMATION:
- Annual Leave - Employees in Senior Management Service and Selected Exempt Service positions are credited with 176 hours of annual leave upon appointment. In subsequent years, the annual allotment is credited on the anniversary date of the initial appointment.
