 The Work You Will Do:

Assistant State Structures Design Engineer/Office of Design/Structures Design Office

 

This position leads the Design Technology Group in the Structures Design Office and is responsible for over 100 Standard Plans for Bridge Construction and a software library of over 20 structural programs. The work product of this group is essential to the design and construction of every Department project that includes bridge work or traffic support structures (mast arms, span sign structures, etc.). The districts and consultant community rely heavily on the technical expertise, standards, and software programs produced and maintained by this group.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Administers, directs, and supervises activities of the Design Technology Group of the Structures Office which is responsible for producing and maintaining the Structures Office's procedures, standards and software.

 

Continuously monitors the American Association of State and Highway Transportation Officials specifications for technical changes that require modification to the Structures standards and software.

 

Serves as the Structures Office liaison with other Florida Department of Transportation offices regarding  Structures standards. Serves as Structures Office's liaison with Federal Highway Administration when directed by the State Structures Design Engineer.

 

Serves as the Structures Office's representative to industry-related associations including the Florida Prestressed Concrete Association, the Florida Precast Concrete Structures Association, and when directed by the State Structures Design Engineer, the Florida Transportation Builders' Association. These duties require professional engineering knowledge and expertise.

 

Serves as the State Structures Design Engineer in his absence. Assists the State Structures Design Engineer in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of that position. This duty requires professional engineering knowledge and expertise.

 

 Preforms employee evaluations, timesheet and leave approvals, training activities and other required administrative activities for the engineering personnel under the position’s supervision.

 

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of Structures Design including structural steel, reinforced concrete, pre-tensioned and post-tensioned concrete and stabilized soil structures
  • Knowledge of Contract Plans Development Process

Skills in:

  • Skill in developing and delivering technical training and making presentations
  • Skill in preparation of structures plans including geometric design, design for roadside safety, structural design and preparation of special details related to structural construction

 

Ability to:

  • Ability to effectively manage, supervise, and assign tasks to a diverse group of employees including professional engineers, technicians and support personnel
  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with Central Office and district personnel,  private consultants, other State Department of Transportation officials, industry and marketing representatives and researchers
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and complete technical research
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Ability to be proactive and work independently.

 

Licensure/Registration/Certification Requirements:

  • Registration as Professional Engineer pursuant to Chapter 471, Florida Statutes

  • This position will be required to respond before, during and following emergency situations
