The Florida Agency for State Technology (AST) seeks to hire talented and dedicated individuals who share our commitment to excellence. The incumbent in this position supports the IMS Main Frame service environment within the Agency for State Technology’s State Data Center (SDC).  The SDC maintains a 24 hour, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, data center operation providing utility computing services to state agencies and other governmental entities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of experience in computer systems analysis and or/computer programming.
  • Experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Background Screening Requirement:

A criminal background investigation, including fingerprinting and statewide and national criminal history records checks, is a condition of employment in this position.


Salary will be based on the State of Florida minimum pay grade for the position.  Consideration may also be given to an applicant’s relevant knowledge, skills, abilities and available agency funds.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This position reports directly to the System Programming Administrator within the Mainframe Platform. This is a technical worker that supports the software that is run on the IBM Mainframe.  This expertise is based on technical experience or in-depth knowledge of how the system operates.  May be subject to on call.


  • Provide user assistance support when the Services Desk analyst encounters difficulty.  This includes both interface between the services desk and other system programmers and problem resolution for products that this position primarily support.
  • Function as technical specialist for trouble-shooting problems relating to user programs and to vendor supplied software and hardware to determine malfunction causes and to initiate and/or recommend corrective actions.
  • Review systems, operational procedures and standards within the Data Center and recommend means to improve efficiency and quality of service to users.
  • Provide technical support for the installation and monitoring of IBM IMS software as well as other IMS related products.  Responsible for working with vendor technical specialists in modifying and/or correcting vendor provided software.
  • Responsible for working with the Disaster Recovery tests and setting up test procedures. 
  • Work with other system programmers and customers to provide problem resolution for products that this position is primarily responsible for.
  • Provide technical support for the installation and monitoring of IBM DB2 software as well as other DB2 related products.  Responsible for working with vendor technical specialists in modifying and/or correcting vendor provided software.



Knowledge of an IBM z/OS operating system.

Knowledge of IBM IMS software

Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Project, Excel

Knowledge of IBM JCL coding

Knowledge of IBM SMPE software

Knowledge of IBM DB2 software

Ability to communicate technical information verbally and in writing.

Ability to read/understand technical instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to check data processing information for accuracy.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
