Position Overview and Responsibilities:
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Office of General Counsel, in Tallahassee, is seeking to fill an attorney position in the Water, Air and State Lands section. Although this position is within the DEP, no experience with environmental law is necessary. This position is primarily transactional and focuses on use of land owned by the state. Consults on and reviews leases and easements authorizing use of state-owned submerged lands for docks, mooring fields, and other uses. Interprets and applies statutes and rules to requests to use state-owned submerged lands. This position will also advise the Office of Greenways and Trails within the Division of Recreation and Parks on issues related to the Florida Greenways and Trails System which may include rulemaking, public meetings, document review, and other duties.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledgeable about computers and business software such as Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint and SharePoint) and Adobe Acrobat.
- A willingness to actively participate, communicate and collaborate with team members, provide proactive guidance, respond to client and co-worker queries, and timely and effectively resolve issues.
- Ability to handle high volume document review in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to conduct legal research on issues including but not limited to administrative law and procedure, environmental law, and state rules of civil procedure.
- Excellent communication and critical thinking skills.
- Proficient with online research tools such as Westlaw and Lexis Nexis.
- Positive attitude.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be a Member of Good Standing with the Florida Bar.
Position of Special Trust Requirement:
This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Preference is for detail and solution-oriented individuals who possess practical critical thinking skills.
- Real estate experience preferred.
