The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is seeking an organized, flexible, and motivated individual to become an essential member of our Public Health Reporting team. This Biological Scientist IV position is in the Environmental Public Health Tracking section within the Division of Public Health Statistics and Performance Management.
Your Specific Responsibilities:
Assemble, evaluate and analyze disaster epidemiology data sets to produce reports on counts and rates of specific diseases associated with hurricanes and other natural disasters.
Manage disaster epidemiology surveillance and reporting, including developing standardized indicators and working with syndromic surveillance and other public health partners.
Assist with Environmental Public Health Tracking grant objectives, including regular communication with budget and contract staff, completing all federal and state reporting requirements.
Provide technical and consultative services in response to requests associated with disaster related illness and injury from county health departments, researchers, citizens and others.
Participate in meetings, trainings and conferences, Advisory Boards and other outreach activities related to Disaster Epidemiology Surveillance and grant duties.
Participate in statewide planning and implementation of activities related to disaster epidemiology and illness surveillance and prevention.
Program evaluation activities on an annual basis to improve program processes and outcomes related to reporting of disaster related illness and injury.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of principles and methods used in disease surveillance in public health settings; knowledge of databases typically used in surveillance of occupationally related disease data collection and analysis; ability to utilize statistical methods to analyze multiple data sets; ability to collect, evaluate, analyze, and interpret data; ability to form consensus and solve problems; ability to work effectively within a time sensitive environment; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to create and organize information into logical formats for presentation in reports, documents, and other written materials; ability to conduct fact-finding research; ability to utilize problem solving techniques; ability to work independently; ability to interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and departmental rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments: ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; possess basic to mid-level skills in statistical packages such as SPSS and/or SAS
Qualifications:
Minimum -
- 4 or more years of experience in applied biostatistics or epidemiological research
- Experience leading independent research projects and complex data analysis
- Proficiency in advanced statistical methods and programming languages.
- Strong analytical and scientific writing skills.
- Experience with multi-source data integration and large datasets.
Preferred -
- Masters in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or related quantitative field.
- 5 or more years of public health research experience.
- Publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
- Professional training or education in specialized analytical methods.
