MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
 

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in chemistry or biochemistry and two (2) years of professional chemical or biochemical experience; or
 

A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in chemistry or biochemistry and one (1) year of professional experience as described above; or
 

A doctorate from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in chemistry or biochemistry.

JOB DUTIES:
 

General:   The duties and responsibilities for this position are directly related to the agency mission regarding the number of official samples analyzed and analytical tests conducted under F.S. Chapter 487, 576, and 580.  This position supports the Sample Analysis section within the Bureau of Agricultural Environmental Laboratories.  The responsibilities include performing complex pesticide and other chemical residue analyses in agricultural related environmental samples, pesticide product formulation samples, feed and fertilizer samples using a variety of analytical instruments and techniques.        
 

Performs a variety of complex analyses of environmental investigative, pesticide formulation, feed, and fertilizer samples utilizing various instrumental techniques, Gas Chromatography (GC), GC Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), ICPMS, Liquid Chromatography (LC), and LCMS. Investigates, identifies and confirms the presence of unknown chemical compounds and pesticides in environmental investigation, formulated pesticide product samples, feed, and/or use monitoring program samples using LCMS. Interprets, evaluates and calculates results from analytical data generated by various instrumental techniques.  Assists in the development and adaptation of methods for feed, fertilizer, and pesticide sample analysis. Participates in method development, improvement and validation studies and serves as a reserve analyst for the Sample Analysis section. Prepares written laboratory reports as required by supervisors.
 

Assists the Bureau Quality Assurance Officer (QAO) and management in taking corrective actions to repair out-of-control sample preparation and analyses methods. Updates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as new techniques and pesticides are added to existing methods.  Helps maintain analytical instruments and their components for proper performance by following appropriate quality assurance/quality control procedures and performing preventive maintenance and/or corrective actions as necessary.  Responsible for following and implementing standard department safety procedures and protocols in the normal course of job duties.  Assists the QAO in writing and maintaining SOPs in support of ISO 17025 Accreditation. Also, in order to maintain technical proficiency, the employee will be required to periodically travel to seminars, workshops, and conferences.
 

Performs other duties related to laboratory operation as assigned by supervisor.
