Position Overview and Responsibilities:

The Marketing Director leads the strategic vision, development and execution of marketing initiatives across all DEP program areas, with a core focus on enhancing ecotourism and public engagement for Florida State Parks and Florida’s aquatic preserves. This position manages a multidisciplinary team and oversees statewide efforts to elevate DEP’s visibility, promote outdoor recreation and foster public appreciation of Florida’s natural and cultural resources.

This position’s duties include:

  • Develop and lead a comprehensive, departmentwide marketing strategy that advances DEP’s mission, enhances public engagement and strengthens the visibility of Florida State Parks and Aquatic Preserves as premier ecotourism destinations.
  • Design and implement integrated marketing campaigns using digital, print and broadcast media to promote key initiatives, seasonal programs, special events and conservation efforts.
  • Collaborate with internal program areas and external partners to align messaging, share resources and support joint outreach efforts, including tourism bureaus, educational institutions and nonprofit conservation groups.
  • Oversee brand consistency across all marketing materials, ensuring alignment with agency goals and Florida’s broader tourism and environmental priorities.
  • Lead the development of compelling content, including brochures, one-pagers, website copy, social media content, videos and photography, that showcases DEP’s initiatives and success stories.
  • Manage and mentor a creative team of writers, designers, photographers and videographers; assign and review work to ensure high-quality, timely production across platforms.
  • Identify and leverage new opportunities to promote DEP-managed lands and programs through ecotourism campaigns, educational partnerships, storytelling and experiential marketing.
  • Maintain and organize the department’s marketing asset inventory, including photos, videos, release forms, design files and printed materials.
  • Monitor campaign effectiveness and audience engagement, using data to refine strategies and report results to leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with state publication and archiving requirements, including submission of final materials to the State Library.
  • Recruit, train and evaluate staff, fostering a collaborative, high-performance team culture focused on innovation, excellence and continuous improvement.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of marketing, branding, public relations and strategic communications, including audience targeting and message development.
  • Knowledge of Florida’s ecotourism assets, including state parks, aquatic preserves and natural resource management practices, or the ability to quickly learn and effectively communicate those topics.
  • Skill in developing and executing integrated marketing campaigns across digital, print and broadcast platforms.
  • Knowledge of AP Style and ability to apply it consistently across all written materials, ensuring clarity, professionalism and alignment with media and public expectations.
  • Skill in leading and managing creative teams, setting priorities and maintaining project timelines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop clear, measurable goals that align with agency priorities.
  • Ability to translate complex environmental or scientific concepts into engaging, easy-to-understand content for the general public.
  • Ability to use common digital marketing tools and platforms, such as email marketing software, content management systems (CMS), analytics dashboards and social media management tools.
  • Ability to use or oversee the use of design and multimedia equipment and software, including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), Canva and video editing software such as Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro.
  • Ability to coordinate and direct photography and videography in the field, including familiarity with DSLR cameras, lighting equipment and audio gear.
  • Ability to maintain organized records, including marketing collateral, photography release forms and production files, in accordance with state retention requirements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency staff, leadership, external partners and the public.
  • Ability to lead with professionalism, creativity and a strong customer-service mindset.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of professional marketing and/or graphics experience.
  • At least two years managerial and project management experience.
  • Able to multi-task and prioritize multiple projects at once.
  • Works well in a fast-paced environment

 

Pay:

$70,000 to $75,000
