This open competitive advertisement is for a SES (Selected Exempt Service) position located at Central Office in Legal Services. 

As a member of the Legal Services team at the Florida Department of Corrections, our mission is to provide comprehensive legal support and guidance to ensure that our operations comply with all applicable laws and regulations. We are dedicated to protecting the rights of inmates, staff, and the public while upholding the principles of justice and fairness. Our goal is to facilitate a safe and secure correctional environment through diligent legal advocacy, informed decision-making, and unwavering integrity.

This position is not a telework position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Advise Top Executives: Provide essential legal advice to the Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Chief of Staff, and other top officials on key policy decisions and legal matters that shape the Department's daily operations.
  • Statewide Legal Guidance: Travel across Florida to attend meetings and offer personalized legal counseling to Department executives on litigation, appeals, legislation, and policy decisions.
  • Lead Legal Operations: Help manage and supervise the Department's legal team, ensuring smooth and efficient operations. Step in as acting General Counsel when needed, leading the team with confidence.
  • Daily Legal Assistance: Provide daily legal advice and support on issues raised by employees, inmates, probationers, parolees, and the public. Conduct legal research, issue opinions, and respond to requests for legal help.
  • Represent the Department: Represent the Department in administrative tribunals, and state and federal courts. Oversee legal representation, prepare, and interview witnesses, draft legal documents, and present arguments in court. Supervise staff and attorneys, provide training, and ensure all mandatory training requirements are met. Evaluate and support employee performance and growth throughout the year.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A member of the Florida Bar in good standing with at least two (2) years of prior experience as an attorney.
