Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a college or university with major course of study in anthropology, archaeology, museum studies or closely related field, OR four (4) years of direct work experience in one or more related fields
  • At least three (3) months of work/volunteer experience in a museum or similar public institution
  • Knowledge of techniques required to curate archaeological and/or museum collections
  • Experience preparing exhibits and/or conducting public tours

Preferences:

  • Experience cataloguing archaeological objects
  • Experience using collections management systems
  • Experience with archival cataloguing
  • Knowledge of Florida’s archaeology & history

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Bureau of Archaeological Research is responsible for the stewardship of archaeological resources on state-owned and managed lands and sovereignty submerged waters in Florida. The Collections and Conservation Section maintains the state’s archaeological collections, which consists of millions of objects representing over 14,000 years of Florida’s history. A successful applicant will assist with the curation and promotion of collections by cataloguing incoming acquisitions and legacy holdings, attending public outreach events, preparing exhibits, and participating in tours.

  • Catalogues incoming artifact acquisitions and legacy collections held by the Division of Historical Resources
  • Inventories archival collections held by the Division pertaining to archaeological collections
  • Assists with the completion of yearly audits as required by 267.115, Florida Statutes
  • Assists with the preparation of artifact loans and in-house exhibits
  • Assists with general collections management include moving and locating collections, and conducting condition assessments
  • Participates in public tours of collections and attends outreach events
  • Assists volunteers & interns
  • Other duties as required

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain professional and effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and members of the public.
  • Ability to travel and work outdoors when required.
  • Strong computer literacy focused on the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and Adobe.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds and climb ladders.
