The Work You Will Do:

Emerging Technology Specialist – Emerging Technology Section

 

This position supports the Emerging Technologies program in achieving the Department's mission to provide a safe and efficient transportation system, with a focus on AI technologies. It assists in short-range and long-range planning, collaborating with consultants, and facilitating coordination between offices performing AI activities. The role also includes supporting the development of AI use cases, ensuring project schedules and efficiency targets are met, and maintaining high-quality standards. It also includes partnering with universities for research, delivering AI training, and maintaining the Emerging Technologies Section website and dashboards.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Assist the Emerging Technologies program in achieving the Department’s mission to provide a safe and efficient transportation system, with a focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. Provide support to the Emerging Technologies Section in effective short-range and long-range planning of emerging technologies and solutions. Collaborate with consultant resources to advance emerging technology initiatives. Facilitate coordination between offices performing AI activities and assist in organizing field visits, as necessary. Support the Department’s emerging technology initiatives at various internal and external meetings and workshops. Provides direct support to the Emerging Technology Section and other staff of the Office of Transportation Technology, as requested.

 

Support the development of prioritization strategies and phased approaches to aid the implementation of AI use cases. Provide logistical and technical support for Emerging Technology projects. Assist in ensuring project schedules and efficiency targets are met, while maintaining high quality standards for AI efforts. This may include supporting the development of AI models to enhance transportation efforts and efficiency; supporting the collaboration with AI experts to implement machine learning algorithms for AI efficiency use cases; and/or supporting the creation or maintenance of AI-powered dashboards, data analysis tools, and decision support systems. Track and periodically perform market scans of emerging transportation technologies, particularly those using AI.

 

Provide support to the Emerging Technologies Section in the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Department’s strategic approach and policies for the implementation of AI technologies. Assist in integrating emerging technologies into the Department’s functional areas and offer guidance to these offices. Ensure adherence to Federal and State AI standards and guidelines. Assist in the development of standard operating procedures, specifications, cost estimates, Request for Information (RFI) solicitations, procurement documentation, presentations and meeting notes as needed.

 

Support the Emerging Technologies Section in ensuring that AI use cases meet FDOT’s AI Policy, and Federal and State cybersecurity requirements. Support the protection of employee, stakeholder, and customer data, as well as Department confidential data. Assist in ensuring that AI tools are transparent, and that Human review and approval is completed on the decisions and outputs. Provides direction on Emerging Technology Section policies and procedures.

 

Provide support in partnering with Florida’s universities to advance transportation emerging technology research. Assist in supporting research of the industry and best practices.

 

Provide support in delivering AI training and assistance to Department staff. Aid in developing training programs to enhance staff knowledge and skills in AI technologies.

 

Assist with maintaining and updating the Emerging Technologies Section website and internal and external dashboards.

 

 

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of the Florida Department Of Transportation (FDOT) Personnel procedures; knowledge of systems engineering methodologies and project management principles.

 

Skills in:

  • Skilled in the support of large scale, complex systems, and programs; Skilled in supporting the creation of presentations.

 

Ability to:

  • Ability to provide support in developing comprehensive work plans to improve efficiency; ability to support the creation of strategies and action plans to achieve results; ability to support the coordination of emerging technology issues internally and externally for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT); Ability to assist in the organization of Emerging Technology activities; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers and team members; Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; Ability to apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; Ability to assist in problem-solving and making timely decisions.; Ability to assist management on technical matters related to emerging technology; Ability to aid in data analysis and research on current artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and stay up-to-date on emerging technologies; Ability to analyze processes and support the development of system and software requirements; Ability to coordinate with offices performing AI activities to ensure efficiency; Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, a diverse workforce, and manage multiple assignments effectively; Ability to work in a complex environment to leverage resources across the Agency; Ability to manage workload to produce on-time end efficient resolutions to problems.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience in Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology, Software Development, Software Testing, Computer Science, Data Science, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Intelligent Transportation Systems, or Automated Vehicles. Post-secondary education may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
