Position Overview and Responsibilities:
In carrying out the duties of this Environmental Specialist III position at the Florida Geological Survey, the incumbent is expected to be aware of and abide by the Department's standards of conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.
- Conducts geological investigations for STATEMAP program.
- Will lithologically describe and make formation picks from collected and existing geologic data, including boreholes and hand samples.
- Will conduct field investigations and collect geologic data that may include core drilling, outcrop sampling, geophysical data collection/interpretation, and any other methods necessary to further the understanding of Florida's geologic history.
- Will produce geologic maps, cross sections, and other geologic products as required.
- Will learn the lithostratigraphy of Florida's geologic formations. Will conduct geologic field work throughout the State of Florida.
- Will use basic computer software including Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office products.
- Will learn database management and input geologic data into FGS' GEODES database.
- Will use GIS software.
- Will communicate efficiently with members of the public regarding various aspects field investigations and geologic data collection.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of or ability to learn the stratigraphy of Florida and how to identify geologic formations.
- Knowledge of the techniques used for describing the lithology, paleontology and mineralogy of rocks and sediment.
- Knowledge and experience in geologic field mapping.
- Knowledge of the procedures, equipment and materials used in laboratory testing and analysis of geologic materials.
- Knowledge of the methods and techniques of scientific geophysical/geological investigations and field sample and data collection.
- Skilled in use of personal computers, scientific calculators, scientific reference sources and computer programs necessary to produce reports, geologic maps, cross-sections and other graphical representations of geologic data.
- Skilled in analyzing and solving geologic problems.
- Ability or willingness to learn to work on drill rigs as needed for geologic data collection.
- Ability to produce quality written reports and scientific publications as the result of conducting geologic research and mapping.
- Ability to collect, record, and analyze/interpret scientific data relating to the science of geology, and geophysical/seismic data collection.
- Ability to apply the scientific method to geologic problems.
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and coordinate personnel and work assignments.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to plan and participate in fieldwork as needed for research projects.
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least 4 years of verifiable related experience in detailed lithologic sample description, geologic formations identification, and geographic information systems software. Post-secondary degrees from an accredited college or university with a major in geology may be used as an alternative for the required years of experience on a year-for-year basis. A credential evaluation report from an approved agency must be submitted along with all foreign degrees.

Position of Special Trust Requirement:
This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Bachelor of Science degree is preferred. Prior and relevant work experience is preferred.
Pay:
The salary for this position is $53,580.60.
