MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Forestry or related field and two (2) years of professional experience in forestry; or

A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Forestry or related field and one (1) years of professional experience in forestry; or

An associate’s degree in Forestry or related and four (4) years of professional experience in forestry.

Professional experience in forestry can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Requires possession of a valid driver license.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

The incumbent will be required to be FIA certified by the USDA FS within one (1) year of appointment.

Occasional to moderate travel required. Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.

NOTES:

The anticipated hiring salary for this position is between $40,948.18 and $60,000.20 annually.

JOB DUTIES:

This is a highly skilled staff position in the Forest Management (FM) Bureau. This position is responsible for coordinating the Florida Forest Service (FFS) statewide Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program. Incumbent provides technical staff support to the FFS Forest Utilization Specialist.

Plans, directs and coordinates the statewide FIA Program for the FFS. Supervises field positions and trains personnel that conduct field data collection for the FIA Program. Incumbent travels to field sites as required to evaluate, oversee and monitor application of inventory practices at permanent plot and logging utilization study site locations. Reports progress weekly, identifies and solves problems that impede field data collection. Maintains records of all activities of the FIA field positions including time sheets, travel logs, mileage records, vehicle maintenance and personnel evaluations.

Responsible for managing budget, and resources (staff, vehicles, computers, data loggers, cell phones, etc.) of any assigned programs in an efficient and accountable manner. Responsible for ensuring that assigned program areas have operational procedures and processes which result in accountability and compliance with FFS and department policies and procedures.

With direction from the FM Bureau Forest Utilization Specialist, assists with the coordination and collection of field data and other information for periodic documents published by the USDA Forest Service (USFS), Southern Research Station FIA Program, including but not limited to: Florida’s Forests Analytical Report, Florida’s FIA Factsheet, Florida Timber Product Output and Use Report, and Florida Harvest and Utilization Study. Provides assistance in maintenance of the FFS Wood Using Industry Directory. Incumbent shall have a working knowledge of forest inventory methods including aerial photographic and satellite image interpretation, and standard inventory hand and electronic tools. In addition, incumbent will be familiar with the USFS FIA data processing and reporting tools and prepare reports as requested.
