This position requires a valid Class (A) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

  1. three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;
  2. any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;
  3. a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and
  4. a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years

In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query. Click here to register for the Clearinghouse.  A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant.

Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class A license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position. Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query. Upon hire, this position also requires applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Drivers Record Requirements Policy.  The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding. An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements. The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee. If the Employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the Employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Assists Research Project Managers. Provides the logistics for in-house testing and coordinates the personnel and equipment for multiple tests. Ensures fabrication complies with the design plans for test specimens and testing apparatus. Keeps track of progress and budget. Upon request, provide detailed reviews of inspection reports for movable bridges. Ensures compliance with the FDOT Bridge Maintenance Reference Manual, FDOT Movable Bridge Operations Procedure, FDOT Bridges and Other Structures Inspection and Reporting Procedure, and AASHTO Movable Bridge Inspection, Evaluation, and Maintenance Manual. Provides feedback and comments.

 

Provides detailed reviews of construction plans and specifications for movable bridge design and rehabilitation. Ensures compliance with the FDOT Structures Manual, FDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, FDOT Movable Bridge Operations Procedure, AASHTO Movable Bridge Inspection, Evaluation, and Maintenance Manual, and AASHTO LRFD Movable Highway Bridge Design Specifications. Provides feedback and comments. Upon request, performs site visits for movable bridge construction projects, including new construction, repair, and retrofit projects. Ensures compliance with the contract documents. Provides feedback and comments. Operates load testing vehicles (CDL) and under bridge inspection equipment at testing sites throughout the state and during testing. Assists in the purchase of testing equipment and the maintenance of the lab equipment. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of design codes for movable bridges; Skills in interpretation and application of various design codes, including AASHTO LRFD Movable Highway Bridge Design Specifications; Ability to evaluate mechanical and electrical systems for movable bridges; Ability to evaluate bridge electrical and mechanical system compliance with FDOT Structures Manual, , FDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, FDOT Movable Bridge Operations Procedure, FDOT Bridges and Other Structures Inspection and Reporting Procedure, AASHTO Movable Bridge Inspection, Evaluation, and Maintenance Manual, and AASHTO LRFD Movable Highway Bridge Design Specifications; Excellent computer skills, in particular those that relate to the analysis, design, and detailing of structures; Knowledge of structural testing including dynamic, static, and fatigue testing; Knowledge and understanding of the data acquisition equipment and transducers used in structural testing and their abilities and limitations; Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally including the preparation of written reports and oral presentation relative to ongoing and completed work; Ability to work effectively with a group as part of a team; Ability to be proactive and work independently; Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with others; Ability to work on ladders and scaffolding and carry equipment weighing 50 pounds; Knowledge of and competent with hand tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or its equivalent and two years of educational or work experience. Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License.
